The Evergreen State Society: Supporting Non-Profits
By Putnam Barber
The Evergreen State Society (TESS) is a Seattle-based organization that works
to help nonprofit organizations with management questions and policy issues.
Last year TESS published "Nonprofits in Washington”, (available from the
Society's website at www.tess.org
It also manages the web site called the Internet Nonprofit Center, at www.nonprofits.org
.
Every month, friends and supporters of The Evergreen State Society gather for
an informal breakfast on the campus of Seattle University where they discuss
with a guest ideas suggested by the title "Civil Society in Everyday
Life." The January topic was eDemocracy, and the question posed by Prof.
John Collins of the Institute of Public Service was whether the rise of the
Internet will strengthen or weaken American democratic institutions.
Earlier guests have included David Brewster, Executive Director of Town Hall,
Lai-Lani Ovalles and Norma Straw of the Metro Center YMCA Youth Engagement
Project, and City Council Member Richard Conlin.
The meetings are open to the public and drop-ins are welcome. They are held
on the third Tuesday (next meeting is on February 20th) from 8 to 9:30 am.
On March 26, 2001, The Evergreen State Society will cosponsor a day-long
conference of researchers and practitioners discussing "The High Performing
Nonprofit" at the NW Rooms of the Seattle Center.
For further information and to register for the conference, see the web page
at www.nwforum.org/nonprofit. The conference is supported by a grant from the Bank of America. Other
sponsors of the day are the Evans School of Public Affairs at the University of
Washington and the Center for Nonprofit and Social Enterprise Management at
Seattle University.
