What a Year!
By
League Chairman, Tom Albro

Dear friend and fellow member,

What a pleasure it is for me to inform you that your Municipal League is doing well. We are fiscally sound and solidly engaged in making our communities better places and our local government more effective.

By all accounts, 2000 was a very successful year for the League. We faced head-on our organizational challenges. We refocused on our mission. We re-established member-based standing committees. We met our fundraising goals and held to our budget. We ended the year with increased membership. We rated every legislative candidate in King County. With your help and support, we have turned ourselves around.

Now it’s time to keep moving forward and gather steam.

This year is off to a great start. We have raised over $45,000 toward our fundraising goal of $75,000. This is our largest source of financial support, so please join with your fellow members and make a special gift of any amount today. Our fundraising drive will end soon on March 31, so don’t delay.

In March, thanks to the generous support of AT&T Wireless, 50 Muni League members (it could be you!) will join with 50 students from local high schools for a trip to Olympia to meet with legislators and have a tour of the inner workings of the Capitol. The Civic Awards Luncheon and Annual Membership Meeting will be held on June 8th. In July our Candidate Evaluation Committees will start their work rating as many of the municipal races throughout the county as possible. The Election Watch party will be held on election night in November, one of the most enjoyable Muni League events of the year.

Of course the real work of the Municipal League happens during the ongoing efforts of our committees, on which every member is invited to participate. It is here that the League grapples with the issues of energy management and planning, regional transportation planning and governance, election reform (primaries and initiatives), and “Taking the Pulse” of our fellow citizens. Please volunteer!

The League is back. So get involved and make your corner of the world a better place.

See you there,

Tom Albro, Chairman
