CityClub: Where People and Ideas Come Together
Founded in 1981, CityClub of Seattle offers members and guests informative
public affairs programming. Each year, the Club presents over 40 forums. A
non-profit organization with over 600 active members, its mission is fostering
civic engagement in issues vital to our community through access to leaders,
informative programming, fair debate and a lively exchange of ideas. To
celebrate the Club 's 20th anniversary in 2001, a full year is planned under the
theme "20 Years of Ideas that Changed Seattle & Where They Will Lead
Us."
CityClub is known for its diversity of topics and commitment to
nonpartisanship. Recent forums have featured local, national and international
leaders and newsmakers in lively discussions on a wide variety of issues
including:
- Regional and International Business
- The Environment
- Local and Municipal Public Policy
- Politics, Elections & International Affairs
- Arts & Cultural Affairs
- Health, Social Services & Housing
- Education
- Media & Technology
Most CityClub Forums take place at downtown locations, over lunch. Other
forums occur in the evening at places like Town Hall. After Hours events
highlight regional culture. They combine informal social time with substantive
discussion or experience in unusual and unique locations - hard hat tours of new
cultural facilities, private viewings of art collections and discussions with
outstanding local chefs - to name a few. All events are open to the public.
Recently CityClub expanded to the Eastside. In February, an "Online
Retailing" forum in Bellevue sold out and received rave reviews. The next
Eastside After Hours event is on Sept. 21at Newcastle Golf Club: The topic is
"Charting a Next Course After High Tech Success: What Do You Do When You
Can Do Anything?" The panel will feature high tech "retirees" who
are on to other pursuits - dot-com startups, venture capital, philanthropy, or
community service.
The next Seattle event, which the Municipal League and other groups are
co-presenting with CityClub, is September 8th. "Building a Muscular Democracy"
features John Anderson, 1980 independent candidate for U.S. President, now
President of the Center for Voting & Democracy. He is a passionate advocate for
electoral change including proportional voting, public financing and more.
League members qualify for discounted admission to the forum. For more
