2007 CANDIDATE QUESTIONNAIRE
FOR NON-JUDICIAL CANDIDATES

The Municipal League of King County requests every candidate who participates in the candidate evaluation process to submit background information prior to his/her interview with a candidate evaluation committee.  The questionnaire is the basis of the League’s research and interview process.  The League’s ratings are non-partisan; they are based on standards of Involvement, Effectiveness, Character, and Knowledge, all of which have been developed and refined over the past 90 years.

A printed version of the questionnaire is available for candidates who prefer to use the traditional format.  To obtain a hard copy, please contact the League office.  A copy of this questionnaire will be provided to Candidate Evaluation Committee members to help them prepare for your interview.  Candidate responses, except the confidential section, will be available to the general public at the League website.

 SECTION III

In this section, we are seeking responses that reflect the four ratings criteria: involvement, effectiveness, character, and knowledge.  These are defined as follows:

1.      In a page or less, why are you running for this office?  (Note: the interview committee will be given a copy of this statement before your interview; at the beginning of your interview you will have the opportunity to expand on this statement in any way you wish.)

In the late 1980's, my husband and I chose the Sammamish area as the place to raise our then young family.  I soon became involved in our neighborhood association, and eventually in the original attempts to incorporate the Sammamish area.  Despite the failure of that initial attempt, I filed an intent to incorporate two years later, and worked to bring to fruition what has now become the City of Sammamish.   I have been involved in city boards and committees, school and volunteer, Kiwanis and business groups since that time.

It is a critical time in the City's history, as we determine its character for the future.  I would like to be a part of this process, and my years of experience in City affairs give me a unique perspective on the challenges we face and the potential solutions we may apply.

Sammamish is a bedroom community in which the population is 1/3 kids.  We need to be able to address the needs of this age group, as well as the needs of our older residents.  We have been a city now for eight years, and have yet to provide a teen/community center or other significant services for our youth and elderly populations.

We also struggle with transportation issues as our City is plagued by grid lock on morning and evening commutes.  Our plans for development in the City must be coordinated with our ability to address these limitations.  Our transportation corridors are constrained on the North and South by Redmond and Issaquah.  It is imperative that we continue to work with these other jursidictions to ensure that we maintain some measure of control over our transportation corridors, and we must be cautious in planning our growth.  We cannot rely of SR202 as the answer.  We are not the only ones depending on the SR202 roadway and capacity.

Addressing these many inadequacies economically will be an important factor in a city where our revenues come primarily from property taxes.  My strong fiscal background, together with my intimate knowledge of the City's needs, and familiarity with not only Sammamish but King County and the surrounding cities, will help me to be an asset to the City in putting a plan in place to address the current and future needs of our population.

2.      Describe your most important personal characteristics or traits as they relate to the office you seek.

I am a proven community leader who will take on the tough issues and stay with them until they are resolved.  I am detail oriented, and I am open and able to work with people who may have differing viewpoints to reach a solution.

3.      Please describe in sufficient detail, one to three accomplishments or contributions of which you are most proud.  These examples should illustrate effective skills and capabilities you think apply to the office you are seeking.  These accomplishments may have occurred at any time in your personal, professional, or public life.

1.  My family - I have been very active in the community for many years.  We have raised three great kids and I could not have dedicated so much of my life to the community without the support of my family (including running for this position).

2.  The City of Sammamish - I am very proud to have worked with a small group of intelligent people with a vision.  I am proud to have filed the petition for the city and even more proud to see what has become of that vision.

3. City of Sammamish Comprehensive Plan - This is a document which represents thousands of hours of work. The breadth of knowledge and experience I gained from this endeavor is incredible.  This is a document of consensus resulting from a group of very knowledgable and dedicated people who were able to work through a monumental task.  It says lots about the community and people involved.

4.      Please list or describe your current and past activities in the community in which you have acquired skills that relate to the office you seek.  Include your role in the activity and the year(s) in which you were involved.  Involvement consists of many areas such as family, neighborhood, community, employment, or public life.

Sammamish Planning Commissioner

Sammamish Planning Advisory Board Member

Sammamish Parks Board Member

Sammamish Kiwanis - past Treasurer

Cascade Republican Women - past Treasurer

King County Women's Advisory Board Member

King County Eastside Metro Transit Committee Member

Washington State Boundary Review Board Member

Lake Washington School District Boundary Review Committee Member

Co-Pres - Samantha Smith PTSA

Co - Chair - Explorer Parent Association

Pres. - Montage Homeowners Association

Pres. - Deerfield Homeowners Association

Elected as Precinct Committee Officer for over 17 years

  1. Please describe the duties of the office you seek.  Which are the most important duties and why?

Representive of our Community on local, county and state levels

an ear of the community and a voice to the council

steward of city lands, transportation, health and welfare

An effective member of our city council

I believe that "An ear of the community and voice to the council" is the most important.  If you forget to listen and see, you cannot effecively represent the citizens.
