In this section, we are seeking responses that reflect the four ratings criteria: involvement, effectiveness, character, and knowledge. These are defined as follows:
1. In a page or less, why are you running for this office? (Note: the interview committee will be given a copy of this statement before your interview; at the beginning of your interview you will have the opportunity to expand on this statement in any way you wish.)

I’m running because we need a better Port Commission. With new leadership, we can change the Port of Seattle. Other recently elected Commissioners have worked hard to improve the environment. When I am elected, the port will have a majority of reform-minded commissioners to extend those efforts to improve transparency and reduce the King County Port tax burden.
The Port of Seattle is an important economic engine with great potential for our region but it has been making headlines for all the wrong reasons: with examples such as CEO pay and police department email scandals, the need for change at the Port of Seattle is clear and the time is now.
I believe in a working port that enables family wage jobs.
We need to improve port security and our Police Department to ensure a safe and secure Port.
Since the incumbent took office, our Port tax has doubled to nearly $70 million, while competing ports do not have a tax subsidy. The Port of Seattle should be a thriving, self-sustaining agency. It’s time to reduce and phase out the special Port Tax.
I bring an independent viewpoint, business leadership skills and the global perspective necessary for reform. As a former business tenant of the Port of Seattle, I have ten years of direct experience and insight needed to fix the problems at the Port. Citizens deserve government that operates transparently and assures that our resources are invested wisely. When it fails, we must demand change. |
2. Describe your most important personal characteristics or traits as they relate to the office you seek.
|
With my experience and skill sets, I bring an independent viewpoint, business leadership skills and the global perspective necessary for reform. A graduate of the UW in Economics and member of the Varsity Crew Team, I have traveled to over 30 countries. I was a program manager at Microsoft and a successful owner of two restaurants (Charlie’s at Shilshole and El Nino) with 60 employees. My background in business, my understanding of labor perspectives, and my dedication to the environment are huge factors in what I will bring to this office. Perhaps most importantly, I have a deep sense of integrity, and I believe that our Port taxpayers deserve a more transparent commissioner who will better work for their interests. |
3. Please describe in sufficient detail, one to three accomplishments or contributions of which you are most proud. These examples should illustrate effective skills and capabilities you think apply to the office you are seeking. These accomplishments may have occurred at any time in your personal, professional, or public life.
|
I owned and operated two successful restaurants, one where my landlord was the Port of Seattle. I had more than 60 employees. I'm proud of having provided so many people with jobs in a place they enjoyed working and could make a decent living. This was also a key community center for various groups such as boaters, the Ballard neighborhood families and the elderly. I was a programmer at Microsoft, and I am proud of my accomplishments there. I needed to work at a high level of creativity and teamwork. I created Outlook Web Access, a tool that millions of people use everyday. I see this current endeavor, running for office, as an accomplishment in itself. I intend to win, and the sheer amount of effort and time I have put into this has made the experience one that I expect to look back on with pride and gratitude. |
4. Please list or describe your current and past activities in the community in which you have acquired skills that relate to the office you seek. Include your role in the activity and the year(s) in which you were involved. Involvement consists of many areas such as family, neighborhood, community, employment, or public life.
|
Running a large restaurant (275 seats), is a community project. It becomes home to many people and a shared living room for neighbors. We worked with many local churches and charities including Boy's and Girls club, Ballard Football and many others. We always provided free gift certificates or hosted charity events to local organizations.

The Port of Seattle commissioners are responsible for the oversight of the budget and opperations of the Sea Port and Airport lines of business. The commission is responsible for the safety and security of the port, the jobs at the port, being stewards of our environment, and determining the need, opportunity, and balance of growth and taxes. Most importantly, we are responsible to the voters. All of these duties are vital, but basic transparancy is the most important. That way, if we are lacking in any of our duties, the voters will know and a correction can be demanded. |

My civic involment extends to various groups while associated with The University of Washington, the Varsity Crew program, Microsoft, my businesses and my neighborhood. In business, we were active in promoting charities in many ways. As community centers, my restaurants were welcome places for people from all backgrounds to meet and share time and experiences. We extended these experiences to provide opportunities to charities and other organizations. |
