The Municipal League of King County requests every candidate who participates in the candidate evaluation process to submit background information prior to his/her interview with a candidate evaluation committee.  The questionnaire is the basis of the League’s research and interview process.  The League’s ratings are non-partisan; they are based on standards of Involvement, Effectiveness, Character, and Knowledge, all of which have been developed and refined over the past 90 years.

A printed version of the questionnaire is available for candidates who prefer to use the traditional format.  To obtain a hard copy, please contact the League office.  A copy of this questionnaire will be provided to Candidate Evaluation Committee members to help them prepare for your interview.  Candidate responses, except the confidential section, will be available to the general public at the League website.

 SECTION III

In this section, we are seeking responses that reflect the four ratings criteria: involvement, effectiveness, character, and knowledge.  These are defined as follows:

1.      In a page or less, why are you running for this office?  (Note: the interview committee will be given a copy of this statement before your interview; at the beginning of your interview you will have the opportunity to expand on this statement in any way you wish.)

I am running for Seattle School Board because I want every student to have a quality schools regardless of where they live in Seattle. I have a unique background as a former classroom teacher, national educational consultant, Nathan Hale PTSA President, district staff person in Boston Public Schools and five years on the AE2@Decatur Site Council working as the chair of district relations committee.

2.      Describe your most important personal characteristics or traits as they relate to the office you seek.

I believe that I have several traits that will make me a great addition to the Seattle School Board.  First is my ability to listen.  The ability to listen is pivotal to problem-solving.  My employment experiences combined with my business degree and years of management know-how also gives me ability to work with diverse groups and come to consensus.  And lastly, I am willing to make the hard choices based on careful data analysis, input from the community and district staff recommendations.

3.      Please describe in sufficient detail, one to three accomplishments or contributions of which you are most proud.  These examples should illustrate effective skills and capabilities you think apply to the office you are seeking.  These accomplishments may have occurred at any time in your personal, professional, or public life.

One accomplishment that I am most proud of occurred when I was teaching 5th grade in a very rural school district of upstate New York.  The district was very small with a significant low income population.  When classes were being formed for the year, the teachers selected the student for their class.  It was clear during the process that there were a many students that teachers did not want in there class due to their previous academic performance or behavior problems.  I decided that I would take all the students that the others did not want.  Most of my students were significantly behind in their spelling and math skill.  That year we focused intently on the areas of spelling and math.  At the end of the year when my students were assessed, all were at or above grade level in both reading and spelling.  It showed me as a young educator the power of having someone that cares and the difference one person can make.  For many of my students it was the first real academic success they had encountered.  I know that experience stayed with many of them as they moved forward.   Sometime change happens with the action a single person.

4.      Please list or describe your current and past activities in the community in which you have acquired skills that relate to the office you seek.  Include your role in the activity and the year(s) in which you were involved.  Involvement consists of many areas such as family, neighborhood, community, employment, or public life.

Florida A & M University (2005 - present)

I have been working with this Historically Black College as a consultant to improve the preparation of teachers at the university.  I perform the analysis of elementary and high school student performance on state-wide exams that are taught by Florida A&M University graduates throughout the state.  Part of my focus is on what the university can do ensure that their graduates are prepared for classroom teaching through changes in the university curriculum and the methods used to teach college students.

Nathan Hale High School PSTA - (2005 - 2007)

I served as president of the Hale PTSA for two terms.

LVR Soccer - (1998 - 2004)

I coached the same group of girls for almost all of their elementary school years.  Our focus was two fold; to learn the basics of the game and to have fun.

AE2@Decatur Site Council - (1998 - 2004)

I was an active member of the site council for 10 years while my two children attended AE2.  During that time I served over 5 years as the District Relations Chair.  In that role, I attended school board meeting at least one a month to report back to the school community on issues.  I also meet with district staff to work on concerned the school had about policy issues..

  1. Please describe the duties of the office you seek.  Which are the most important duties and why?

I see the duties of the school board director as covering the areas of; Vision, Oversight, Policy, and Advocacy.

•           Vision - It is the school board’s duty to provide forward thinking to guide the direction   of public education in the city of Seattle.  This vision must be communicated to the community at large.

•           Oversight - The oversight by the school board is to ensure that policies are adhered to by the district as well as supervise the superintendent. Within the oversight the board ensures the fiscal integrity of the district.

•           Policy Formation - The school board is the policy setting entity for the school district.  The policies implemented are based on measurable goals or objectives.

•           Advocate - The school board is also the advocate for public education throughout the country.

For me these duties have to work together to make the school board effective. Not paying attention to one will cause the others to suffer.
