I am running for Mayor to move Redmond forward. Redmond has made great plans, but little progress in implementing those plans. Moving forward means Redmond becomes more a dynamic, connected, healthy city. In the end, I want Redmond to be a place where my children choose to live.
To be more dynamic, Redmond needs a downtown with an identity. I want a downtown Redmond to go to, not just go through; a place where we choose to live, shop and work. This means more housing in the downtown area and mass transit to support the increased density.
Moving forward means connecting with our neighbors to solve problems. Growth and transportation issues don’t stop at the City’s borders. If we ignore our neighboring cities, their problems become our problems.
Moving forward means creating a city with a healthy, sustainable environment, housing choices, and finances. Healthy means having good public safety services. A healthy city is one in which where live, work, play, learn, worship, and connect in an economically sustainable fashion.
My parents chose to make Redmond our family’s hometown in 1969. I made the same decision for my family in 1991. The test of my success will be if my children choose to live here.
The City of Redmond has every reason to enjoy a bright future. I am eager to ensure the success of the vision, by working with the City Council and our employees to protect what makes Redmond a great place to live. |
2. Describe your most important personal characteristics or traits as they relate to the office you seek.
|
I have a natural ability to lead through communication, collaboration and consensus building. These characteristics combined with my connection to the community, experience in local government and skill in budget and finance are the attributes that will serve me best as mayor.
My ability to lead through communication, collaboration, and consensus- building are vitally needed in Redmond. I maintain a database of emails and issues and notify citizens when issues of concern appear on the Council’s docket. I would continue this practice as Mayor. In addition, I seek out opposing views to uncover the complexity of the issue instead of just sticking to the dogma of a slogan.
My collaboration and consensus- building skills are best demonstrated in drafting the last City budget. Redmond had a levy lid vote in May 2006 that failed. As Chair of the Finance Committee, I led the Council through a process to set priorities for the upcoming budget. We completed this work by the end of June for staff to use in preparing the budget. When the preliminary budget did not meet our goals, I led the Council though a process to identify our differences and find common interests, resulting in a budget that was adopted 5-2.
My knowledge and experience in local government are immediate assets. I have worked for the cities of Snoqualmie, Kent and Federal Way, as well as King County. For the past 10 years I have served as the Finance Director at Meydenbauer Center in Bellevue. I have worked as staff for public forums on capital improvement plans in Kent and King County. In Federal Way, I facilitated a Citizens’ Advisory Committee to develop policy on solid waste and recycling.
In light of the adopted State referendums on taxation, the Mayor needs to know city financing and budgets and present it to the public in an understandable way. It is difficult to sustain a city budget without constantly justifying it before the voters. My experience with municipal finances coupled with my communication skills are an invaluable asset.
My dedication to Redmond began when I was four. My education includes a Masters in Public Administration from University of Washington. My experience of ten years in local government and ten years as CFO of Meydenbauer Center will make me an effective Mayor immediately.

3. Please describe in sufficient detail, one to three accomplishments or contributions of which you are most proud. These examples should illustrate effective skills and capabilities you think apply to the office you are seeking. These accomplishments may have occurred at any time in your personal, professional, or public life.

I am proud of my work as a founding member of the Lake Washington Schools Foundation. My first role was speaking to groups of people in the community about the importance of establishing a foundation for the District. A partner in this effort arranged for key people to gather, and I would use my persuasion and passion for the cause to generate enthusiasm. From these talks, we gathered 20 core stakeholders who were committed to advance the mission of a Schools Foundation. I did the leg work of writing up the incorporation documents and creating the legal structure.
In my next role as the Board’s first Treasurer, I was able to exercise my stewardship skills as I led the board through the process of creating the first budget and participated in the development of a basic fundraising program. Through my leadership as Treasurer, the Board was able to give out $16,000 in awards to new teachers to help them set up their classrooms and $35,000 in grants for classroom enrichment programs.
I enjoyed the opportunity to use my communication, collaboration and consensus building abilities to make a significant impact on the community by helping to start the Lake Washington Schools Foundation. I am proud of the legacy I leave behind as the Foundation continues to grow and help improve our children’s education. |
4. Please list or describe your current and past activities in the community in which you have acquired skills that relate to the office you seek. Include your role in the activity and the year(s) in which you were involved. Involvement consists of many areas such as family, neighborhood, community, employment, or public life.

In 2003, I was elected to the Redmond City Council. I have chaired the Planning and Public Works Committee and currently chair the Finance and Public Administration Committee.
I represent the City of Redmond on the Cascade Water Alliance Board to ensure a drinking water supply for Redmond for the next 50 years and beyond. As a member of the Executive Committee and chair of the Public Affairs Committee, I advocate for improving water quality and adding water to streams and rivers to enhance fish habitat.
I have been active in the Eastside community for many years. In 2005, I served as a founding Board Member and Treasurer for the Lake Washington Schools Foundation. From 1997 through 2002, I managed, coached, and umpired in Redmond West Little League and coached in the Lake Washington Youth Soccer Association. My family has been a member of Saint Jude’s Catholic Church since 1980. From 1994 through 2005, my wife and I organized and taught marriage preparation classes through Catholic Engaged Encounter. My wife and I have been active members of the PTSAs of our children’s schools. In addition, my family belongs to SODA (Serve Our Dog Area) of Marymoor Park where we often take our Airedale Terrier for off-leash fun.

A major role of the Mayor is to implement adopted city policy and vision through the staff and resources available. While that is the technical answer, in reality, the Mayor is like the general contractor building a house.
The Mayor must work with the owners (citizens), architects (Council), laborers (staff), and the neighbors (regional leaders), to assemble a beautiful house. This requires a Mayor to be an executive manager, negotiator, financial planner, and public affairs consultant to lead a large project to success. My ten years in local government coupled with my ten years as the CFO at Meydenbauer Center has given me this experience to be an effective Mayor immediately.
Examples of my work include working as a senior budget analyst for King County in 1995. My job was to conduct the financial analysis in negotiations with the Seahawks and the Mariners to stay in Seattle. My job was not to make the policy decisions but to supply analysis for an open, public decision.
As Controller for the King County Public Facilities District, I was responsible for the financing and budgeting of a $417 million project (Safeco Field). This is more than number crunching. I was also responsible for a Citizens Oversight Committee to review my work and make recommendations to the King County Council.
At Meydenbauer Center, the CFO is an executive leadership position. Shaping corporate culture, creating a financial and operational roadmap for our future, and leading managers to success are my main roles.
My ability to work with the community, the Council, the staff and regional leaders will ensure issues are addressed in a way that is best for Redmond and the greater community. Like the general contractor building a house, the Mayor is the focal point of this critical balancing act.
