2007 CANDIDATE QUESTIONNAIRE
FOR NON-JUDICIAL CANDIDATES

The Municipal League of King County requests every candidate who participates in the candidate evaluation process to submit background information prior to his/her interview with a candidate evaluation committee.  The questionnaire is the basis of the League’s research and interview process.  The League’s ratings are non-partisan; they are based on standards of Involvement, Effectiveness, Character, and Knowledge, all of which have been developed and refined over the past 90 years.

A printed version of the questionnaire is available for candidates who prefer to use the traditional format.  To obtain a hard copy, please contact the League office.  A copy of this questionnaire will be provided to Candidate Evaluation Committee members to help them prepare for your interview.  Candidate responses, except the confidential section, will be available to the general public at the League website.

 SECTION III

In this section, we are seeking responses that reflect the four ratings criteria: involvement, effectiveness, character, and knowledge.  These are defined as follows:

1.      In a page or less, why are you running for this office?  (Note: the interview committee will be given a copy of this statement before your interview; at the beginning of your interview you will have the opportunity to expand on this statement in any way you wish.)

Bellevue is growing rapidly, and we must be proactive in managing that growth.

Our fire department has not been able to meet the City's target response time in ten years. This was a goal that the City Council had voted for and which is consistent with industry standards.  The City paid for an independent study a few years ago that showed what areas could use improvements in order to bring the City back in line with their goals. With the rapid growth that our City is continuing to experience, and a downtown population that is projected to double within just six years, we need to get back on track more quickly so we can better handle the needs of our growing city.

Increasing growth means that our impact on the environment is increasing as well. Scientific evidence now shows that climate change is escalating, and our window of opportunity to reverse it is diminishing. The City of Bellevue recently voted on how they would tackle climate change locally, and my opponent cast a vote that weakened the City's commitment to this issue. The City of Bellevue has a tradition of being very strong on environmental issues, so I want to ensure that we continue this tradition and work toward responsible solutions.

2.      Describe your most important personal characteristics or traits as they relate to the office you seek.

I am an excellent problem-solver. I thrive on generating creative solutions to strategic challenges. I have had the opportunity to work on several innovative ideas through my company that have increased profitability and efficiency.

I am a self-sacrificing hard-worker. I am willing to work tirelessly to accomplish important goals.

I'm also willing to listen to all sides of an issue and compromise to create real solutions. The decisions that the City Council makes affect people's jobs, homes, money, safety and quality of life. It is important to listen to the people who are affected by these decisions. I have responded to every single phone call or e-mail I have received from voters since I started this campaign, and I intend to continue this level of accessibility once on the City Council.

3.      Please describe in sufficient detail, one to three accomplishments or contributions of which you are most proud.  These examples should illustrate effective skills and capabilities you think apply to the office you are seeking.  These accomplishments may have occurred at any time in your personal, professional, or public life.

I started my company with almost no money in the bank. I worked hard and built my business. It didn't happen overnight -- some months I barely had enough money to keep the lights on -- but through hard work and perseverence, my small high-tech company is now a strong player in the industry. I am proud not only of my own part in building this company, but also in the talent and support of my staff, who have been instrumental in keeping our clients happy and our business growing.

As Advisory Board Chair for the Children's Response Center, I work to help kids recovering from sexual abuse.  I have led the board's work in community outreach, raising money to support the Center's services, and advocating for child safety legislation.

4.      Please list or describe your current and past activities in the community in which you have acquired skills that relate to the office you seek.  Include your role in the activity and the year(s) in which you were involved.  Involvement consists of many areas such as family, neighborhood, community, employment, or public life.

President, Webtronix (2003-present) -- As a business owner, I have been responsible for managing both the details of daily business as well as big-picture strategies for advancing company goals. I have learned to anticipate potential problems and plan accordingly. Contracts need to cover all possible scenarios and ensure that everyone is very clear of their responsibilities and deliverables. The high-tech industry is also continually evolving, so it is important to find the balance between time-tested strategies that have worked in the past and new strategies that fit a changing market.

Advisory Board Chair, Children's Response Center (2006-2007; board member 2004-present) -- Team-building skills and effective communication have been an essential part of my role at the Children's Response Center. I've learned how to compromise and work with different personality types in order to attain common goals.

Director of Internet Relations, CodeBlueNow (2004-present) -- I've worked to engage the public in ways to create positive change in the health care industry. CodeBlueNow is a non-profit, non-partisan organization.

Vice President of Membership, Toastmasters Peak Speakers (2006; member 2005-2006) -- Not only did this experience help to expand my public speaking ability, it also honed my listening skills so that I could evaluate speeches by other members. I had the additional opportunity to help lead a Speechcraft program for adults with developmental disabilities.

Speech Tournament Judge (2005) -- I was a speech tournament judge for local students competing for scholarships.

Founder, Political Exchange (2004) -- I created and managed an online non-partisan political discussion forum leading up to the 2004 Presidential election.

Editor, 2nd Page Publications (1998-2002) -- I managed the publication of resource directories for local families: "Raising Kids on the Eastside" and "Raising Kids in Seattle." These books had information for local parents regarding schools, businesses, events, after-school activities and parks.

  1. Please describe the duties of the office you seek.  Which are the most important duties and why?

The most important duties of a City Councilmember are:

Balance the demands of all aspects of City government within a set budget. This requires setting both short- and long-term priorities, understanding budgetary restrictions and compromising where necessary.

Provide for the safety of the city. People must be able to trust that their leadership is keeping them safe. This means providing proper support of dispatch, fire, police and medical services and equipment; preparing for emergencies such as storms and earthquakes; and adapting to the changing needs of an evolving city.

Listen to the needs of the community. Every City Council decision affects somebody. It is imperative that we listen and take into account the way our decisions will impact the people we serve.

Create policies that work within the framework of the city, utilize opportunities for improvement, and maintain or enhance our quality of life. This also means working with other local governments toward common goals.
