2006 CANDIDATE BACKGROUND QUESTIONNAIRE
FOR NON-JUDICIAL CANDIDATES

The Municipal League of King County requests every candidate who participates in the candidate evaluation process to submit background information prior to his/her interview with a candidate evaluation committee.  The questionnaire is the basis of the League’s research and interview process.  The League’s ratings are non-partisan; they are based on standards of Involvement, Effectiveness, Character, and Knowledge, all of which have been developed and refined over the past 90 years.

A printed version of the questionnaire is available for candidates who prefer to use the traditional format.  To obtain a hard copy, please contact the League office.  A copy of this questionnaire will be provided to Candidate Evaluation Committee members to help them prepare for your interview.  Candidate responses, except the confidential section, will be available to the general public at the League website.

SECTION III

In this section, we are seeking responses that reflect the four ratings criteria: involvement, effectiveness, character, and knowledge.  These are defined as follows:

1.      In a page or less, why are you running for this office?  (Note: the interview committee will be given a copy of this statement before your interview; at the beginning of your interview you will have the opportunity to expand on this statement in any way you wish.)

I am running for re-election because of my concern for families and communities.  I want to be at the table as we move Washington forward.  I will continue to uphold the constitution.  I will continue to work to make education better and more accessible.  I want people to be rewarded for their hard work, and not be burdened with over regulation and over taxation.  I believe it is important to increase our quality of life by reducing commute times so we can spend more time with our families.  Our lack of affordable healthcare is at a critical point and I want to be a part of the solution.  As an Eagle Scout, I learned at an early age the importance of our environment and know the imporatnce of preservation and proper management of our resources.  I look forward to continue working on these and other important issues.

2.      Describe your most important personal characteristics or traits as they relate to the office you seek.

My ability to develop good relationships with both sides of the aisle has helped me to be effective as a state representative.  I have developed a reputation as an honest, hard worker, with integrity.  I maintain an open door policy.  Whether I agree on or not, I am always accessible and available.  I have also shown consistency in my work.  When I tell my constituents or colleagues something, they can count on it.

3.      Please describe in sufficient detail, one to three accomplishments or contributions of which you are most proud.  These examples should illustrate effective skills and capabilities you think apply to the office you are seeking.  These accomplishments may have occurred at any time in your personal, professional, or public life.

My greatest accomplishment is my family.  My wife, three children and I make a great team, which is absolutely essential with our schedule!  In addition to my legislative duties, we have a small business to run and a young family with a special needs son to care for.  On top of that, my wife is a member of the US National Weightlifting team and is training for the 2008 Olympics.  Maintaining this schedule is not eary and requires a lot of hard work, sacrifice, compromise and support.  These skills and attributes necessary to make our home run smoothly, are the same things that allow me to succeed in Olympia.

I am proud of the contributions my wife and I have made through our business.  Roach Gymnastics, Inc., provides over twenty jobs to members of our schools and communities.  We have provided gymnastics, exercise, instruction and discipline to over 5,000 children over the last 7 years.  It has provided us the opportunity to give back to our community in many ways, including my work as a member of the Rotary and Lions Clubs.

Creating a business from scratch is no easy task and everything I have learned and accomplished has helped me as a state legislator.  I have first hand knowledge of many of the issues we deal with in Olympia such as taxes, unemployment insurance, regulations, healthcare, transportation and other important issues.  I don't get to pass on the tough decisions.  The buck stops with me, which helps me when making many tough decisions in Olympia.  Happy and talented employees are a huge part of any successful business.  My wife and I work hard to maintain a good relationship with our employees and it shows on their faces!  Relationship building is also very important part of being successful in Olympia.

4.      Please list or describe your current and past activities in the community in which you have acquired skills that relate to the office you seek.  Include your role in the activity and the year(s) in which you were involved.  Involvement consists of many areas such as family, neighborhood, community, employment, or public life.

I currently volunteer at my church as the Sunday School President.  (I have volunteered in a variety of capacities over the last 20 years.)

My wife and I own Roach Gymnastics, Inc. 1999-present. (see above for details).

I have served as the 31st district State Representative from 2001-present.

Eagle Scout (1990).

I am a husband and father of three children.

Rotary member (2003-present).

Lions club charter member (2005-present).

Created the Youth Methamphetamine Task Force (2001).

Member of the Lake Tapps Task Force (1998-current).

Selected as a member of the American Council of Young Political Leaders (2003-current).

  1. Please describe the duties of the office you seek.  Which are the most important duties and why?

My duties as a state representative include but are not limited to: upholding the constitution, representing my district, helping constituents, voting, passing legislation, committee work, and much more.

I believe the most important thing I can do as a legislator is listen to the people I represent.  This is generally manifest in the way I vote.  Why?  Because it doesn’t matter how hard you try or how hard you work, if at the end of the day, you misrepresent the very people you are working for.
