2005 CANDIDATE BACKGROUND QUESTIONNAIRE
FOR NON-JUDICIAL CANDIDATES

The Municipal League of King County requests every candidate who participates in the candidate evaluation process to submit background information prior to his/her interview with a candidate evaluation committee.  The questionnaire is the basis of the League’s research and interview process.  The League’s ratings are non-partisan; they are based on standards of Involvement, Effectiveness, Character, and Knowledge, all of which have been developed and refined over the past 90 years.

A printed version of the questionnaire is available for candidates who prefer to use the traditional format.  To obtain a hard copy, please contact the League office.  A copy of this questionnaire will be provided to Candidate Evaluation Committee members to help them prepare for your interview.  Candidate responses, except the confidential section, will be available to the general public at the League website.

 SECTION III

In this section, we are seeking responses that reflect the four ratings criteria: involvement, effectiveness, character, and knowledge.  These are defined as follows:

1.      In a page or less, why are you running for this office?  (Note: the interview committee will be given a copy of this statement before your interview; at the beginning of your interview you will have the opportunity to expand on this statement in any way you wish.)

I have been very involved in the Shoreline community for over 25 years, first as a business manager then owner of James Alan Salon.  Since the beginning we have supported local charities such as YMCA, Little League and the local girl’s basketball teams.  Over they years I have seen the impact that volunteers can and should have to improve our community, and instituted a bonus matrix for our employees that include community service.  The more community volunteer work they do the higher the bonus amount they are eligible for.

In recent years I have been in leadership roles in the charities we have supported.  I have been or am currently co-president of the Shoreline Public Schools Foundation, Executive Board member of the Northshore/Shoreline Community Network, president of the Shoreline Cosmetology Advisory Board for Shoreline Community College, Founding Executive Board Member for Forward Shoreline and Board Director of The Shoreline Chamber of Commerce.

As I become more involved I realize even more can be done.  We can improve our city by embracing the growth and changes that a young city experiences.  Great public places bring people together, parks and open spaces give families a place to play, sensible economic development will provide goods and services without the need to travel on congested roadways.  Economic development will bring needed tax revenues that can assists us in further supporting social programs.  It is the promise of what this future can hold that has brought me to run for Shoreline City Council.

There are a lot of great things happening in Shoreline and some of the council have a record of voting against capitol improvement and other projects and in turn end up voting against economic development.  I want the momentum set this year to continue.  My opponent is one of the current council that seems to oppose everything and yet offers no alternatives.  I look forward to being a council member that will work with the public and make the tough choices that a council member is elected to make.

2.      Describe your most important personal characteristics or traits as they relate to the office you seek.

I am a great listener and feel that I seek to find the balance in situations.  I review all information carefully and am comfortable making decisions on a deadline.

I have made many friends and have relationships with people in Shoreline from all walks of life.  I seek council and advice from others and include those affected whenever I have decisions to make.

In the many endeavors of my life and career I have taken on many leadership positions.  I love to work with others to solve problems creatively and I take commitments very seriously.  I always follow through and appreciate seeing the accomplishments that hard work produces.

3.      Please describe in sufficient detail, one to three accomplishments or contributions of which you are most proud.  These examples should illustrate effective skills and capabilities you think apply to the office you are seeking.  These accomplishments may have occurred at any time in your personal, professional, or public life.

Owning the only salon in all of King County with a United Way Workplace Campaign.  In 2003, the year we started our workplace campaign, we received the “Best New Campaign” award from United way.

I was asked to attend a Shoreline Lunch Rotary by the Mayor's wife and was then presented with their “Excellence in Ethics” award for 2004.

Receiving the 2004 “Charitable Outreach Award” from The Salon Association (TSA).  TSA is an association of 7000 independently owned salons across the United States and Canada.  The Salon Association represents over 50,000 salon employees.

In 2003 and 2005 we received The Washington CEO Magazine’s “Best Small Company to Work For” award out of over 100 nominees across Washington State.  I am especially proud of this award and its criteria.  Our teams opinion is highly rated in the analysis and they noted our dedication to their professional development and inclusive decision making.

4.      Please list or describe your current and past activities in the community in which you have acquired skills that relate to the office you seek.  Include your role in the activity and the year(s) in which you were involved.  Involvement consists of many areas such as family, neighborhood, community, employment, or public life.

Trustee, Vice President and now Co-President, Shoreline Public Schools Foundation (3 yrs)

Founding member, Forward Shoreline (an economic development group).  Now on the Executive Board (2 yrs)

Executive board member, Northshore/Shoreline Community Network (1 yr).  We are working this year on youth, family and teen diversion issues and family friendly schools.

Cosmetology Advisory Board, Shoreline Community College, currently President (18 yrs)

Shoreline Chamber of Commerce board member. (2 yrs)

Club 40, networking group of salons averaging about 20 - 25 salon owners and managers (20  yrs)

Attend most Shoreline city Council meetings, read, in advance, the packet of materials completely

  1. Please describe the duties of the office you seek.  Which are the most important duties and why?

Because Shoreline has a Council/City Manager form of government the duties of a council person is to provide direction and set policy for the City staff.  They relay direction and policy to the city manager and he/she and the city staff run the city.  I believe setting policies is the most important duty because policies effect the people of the city.

The policies that the council set should provide direction for the city an d staff.  They includes the city budget, the comprehensive plan, the surface water management plan, parks, open space and cultural services and the transportation plan among others.

The councils job is to take a high level strategic view.  This long term view should provide the short term plan which supports the city staff.  I do not believe it is the councils role to “micro manage” or create unnecessary burdens for the city employees.
