I am driven to win this seat because of my sincere interest in the issues that face the Port. Security at our Port is in dire need of improvements, and my background as a police officer helps me bring that experience to the Port Commission. When I get on the Port Commission, I will ask for the complete plan that the Sea-Port and Sea-Tac Airport divisions have for dealing with natural disasters/terrorist incidents. I will push for accountability of container traffic coming in and out of our seaport.
I am concerned about how the Port of Seattle generates income through our property taxes and how and if we are subsidizing the shipping industry. I would support a comprehensive review of the fee structure that the Port charges to its tenants. We should not as taxpayers be subsidizing corporations that do business with the Port of Seattle.
In addition, I would ask that a regular number of Port Commission meeting be conducted in other locations than the airport and Pier 69. The citizens of King County should be given an opportunity to see how decisions are made by the Commission and given greater access to commission meetings..
I believe that Port of Seattle commissioners should help create employment and business opportunities that support our community be creating family wage jobs and businesses that provide such employment. |
2. Describe your most important personal characteristics or traits as they relate to the office you seek.
|
I have worked to represent the working men and women of King County for most of my adult life through the labor organization that I am a member of. As a shop steward, business agent and now the Executive Secretary of the Building Trades Council I have served both my membership and my community. I believe that my career of service in the workplace relates directly to the expectations that are placed on Port of Seattle commissioners. |
3. Please describe in sufficient detail, one to three accomplishments or contributions of which you are most proud. These examples should illustrate effective skills and capabilities you think apply to the office you are seeking. These accomplishments may have occurred at any time in your personal, professional, or public life.
4. Please list or describe your current and past activities in the community in which you have acquired skills that relate to the office you seek. Include your role in the activity and the year(s) in which you were involved. Involvement consists of many areas such as family, neighborhood, community, employment, or public life.

I believe that my knowledge of the Port of Seattle through my representation of Port of Seattle employees and my administration of the Project Labor Agreements executed between the Seattle/King County Building and Construction Trades Council, AFL-CIO and the Port of Seattle makes me the best candidate. In addition, I have been in positions of leadership within organized labor, the Director of Northwest Fair Contracting Association and my belief in good government as a long time member and former Trustee of the Seattle/King County Municipal League makes me a knowledgeable candidate that can best serve the citizens of King County. My experience as a Police Officer with the King County Sheriff's Department gives me a strong background and understanding of the need for Port Security; my former position as Port Jobs Treasurer adds to my experience in job development (Port Jobs is a non-profit organization that supports and fosters job development with support from the City of Seattle, King County, Port of Seattle and other organizations); and my role as the Washington State Good Roads and Transportation Association President (2004/2005) has given me a depth and breadth of understanding our local transportation issues that no other candidate for this seat brings.

|
1) Port of Seattle commissioners are reposnsible for the oversight of the budget and opperations of the Sea Port and Airport lines of business. With the taxing authority that the Port has, commissioners need to pay constant attention to the financial liabilities of the Port.
2) Safety and security of Port facilities should be constantly reviewed by the commissioners.
3) Commissioners should anticipate future growth of the Puget Sound Region and plan for such growth not only in the core services that the Port provides but also a part of a regional approach. The Port should work closely with all public entities in anticipating such growth. |
