I have enjoyed serving and working with the citizens of Bellevue and the region. Together, we have accomplished a great deal. There is always more to do and I still enjoy working on issues. It is very rewarding to begin a dream with the community, continue to work on it, and then see it accomplished. A recent example of this, was the most heart-warming opening of Lewis Creek Park - a project which the community has been working on together - for my entire 2 council terms. About 1000 people came during the opening day of the park. It was a celebration! I have met so many wonderful people and continue to meet more. We live in a beautiful part of the country. I enjoy working to keep it that way and making it even better for future generations. |
2. Describe your most important personal characteristics or traits as they relate to the office you seek.
|
I am patient. I am positive. I am told that people enjoy being around me because I listen to them and have a lot of energy. They enjoy working with me to accomplish things.
Two of my past careers include being a dental hygienist and an Assistant Professor. These professions, in retrospect, provided training in personal skills, people management, people training and team work. I find that people often come to Oral Communications scared, mad, and filled with emotion when they want to communicate their position on an issue. My training as a dental hygienist helps because people come to the dentist with many of the same feelings. In my city council role, I try and make them comfortable with themselves - so we can listen to their needs.
Also, I find that often people do not possess all of the information that they need - they are responding to rumors or have received only part of the information. My training as a teacher has helped provide the background where I am comfortable educating folks - providing information at a level that they can understand (while still being respectful) - so the information that they are lacking - can be conveyed in a manner that can easily be understood.
Patience helps a lot because often the same information has to be repeated over and over again.
Kindness is also a trait that is important. I believe many people want to participate in the public process, but feel intimidated by the whole thing. Reaching out and inviting them to come is often the 'nudge' that is needed to bring a whole new perspective to the table.
"No" is a word that is an easy solution to just about any problem. "Yes" is much more difficult as it often requires working on a solution that required consensus or compromise. Being able to help community members to see both sides of an issue and work together to accomplish a goal is difficult and yet, one of the most rewarding things I do. |
3. Please describe in sufficient detail, one to three accomplishments or contributions of which you are most proud. These examples should illustrate effective skills and capabilities you think apply to the office you are seeking. These accomplishments may have occurred at any time in your personal, professional, or public life.
4. Please list or describe your current and past activities in the community in which you have acquired skills that relate to the office you seek. Include your role in the activity and the year(s) in which you were involved. Involvement consists of many areas such as family, neighborhood, community, employment, or public life.

Serving on the Bellevue City Council is like serving on a Board of Directors. The Board members select their leadership team - Mayor and Deputy Mayor. The duties include creating policy for guiding the city, working with the Leadership Team of the city, working with the neighborhood communities, business communities, and all members of the community. Increasingly, a great deal of time is required to serve on committees: local, regional and national. I have served at all levels.
I believe the most important duty is listening. This may sound odd - however, I am now in my 8th year of service and this is the duty that is the hardest and the most needed. Listening requires patience and skill - hearing the issues - and not worrying about the delivery of the message (sometimes delivered shyly, or with a great deal of anger or other emotion.) After listening, the skill of balancing perspectives is the next most difficult. Balancing all sides of an issue is sometimes exhausting - however, it is critical. This does not require pacifying everyone. It does require explaining why a vote is taken after careful study of the issue, listening and learning from the public testimony.
Another important skill is understanding that city council members craft policy and Do Not run the day to day operations of the city. Instead, stating the policy and allowing staff to dream, innovate and create the best way to handle the situation. This is difficult as it is often tempting to want to dream, innovate and create. If the Council 'dictates' the 'how to do it' I believe we also risk removing the creativity, joy and fun of work of public service for employees.
Good communication skills are really helpful. Being able to teach and explain a position or point of view (and listen to other's points of view) is an essential skill for public service.
Finally, having the ability to serve as a TEAM member (both on the council, with the staff, other jurisdictions and community members) is critical to achieving success and moving a city forward. Individuals who serve for their own political gain or purpose, rarely serve the best interests of the community or the region.
