The Port of Seattle needs new leadership. Specifically, it needs financially astute leaders intent on transforming an underperforming public asset. In the past 10 years the Port of Seattle has lost over 37% of its market share to other West Coast ports - costing our region jobs and opportunities for economic growth. Our Port can do better, much better. The citizens of King County deserve more for their tax dollars. They deserve strong capable leadership able and unafraid to ask tough questions and seek creative solutions.
I am a King County native who was raised in Bellevue and graduated from Bellevue High School and the University of Washington with a degree in accounting. I have been a resident of Seattle for 16 years. After working in New York and abroad in international financial markets for 10 years, I joined the Treasury group at Microsoft in 1990, where I managed a portfolio which grew from $310 million to $23 billion under my leadership. I left Microsoft in 1999 to build my own investment management company. In four years this business had grown into a successful enterprise and my concern for the quality of life in our region became my primary focus. This passion for our community—and building a strong diverse economy for our region—led me to apply my energy, time and talent to running for Port Commissioner.
I have an obligation to give back to the community that has given me so much. I want to see future generations have similar opportunities to grow and to enjoy the natural benefits of this region. Along with the professional experience I will bring to the Port of Seattle, will be myleadership and governance skills. I intend to use these skills to develop business practices and models to make the Port competitive on a global basis—creating jobs and economic opportunity for our region while acting as a model steward for the environmental and social values of our community. I have the knowledge and ability to ensure the efficient leveraging of current taxes levied on real estate owners in King County and the drive to work to eliminate these taxes. Lastly, I will strive to create greater openness and accountability on all issues; ranging from how security decisions are made to the wisdom of selling port property at sub-market value. |
2. Describe your most important personal characteristics or traits as they relate to the office you seek.
|
My academic and hands on success, on Wall Street, with Microsoft, and in my own business are based on a keen sense of good judgement and fiduciary responsibility. I intend to combine these characteristics with my knowledge and ability to formulate creative solutions to complex problems. For an institution like the Port of Seattle, which is currently losing market share and nearly $3 billion dollars in debt, I believe these personal traits and experiences will strongly contribute to improving the current state of the Port’s business model. My ability to gather, organize and understand vast complex amounts of data and to construct and implement an action plan which incorporates constituent input is something unprecidented at the Port. I have experience at the global level in face-to-face presentations of complex financial issues and have succeeded in making these presentations understandable to both institutional investors and non-professionals. I am a patient and confident public speaker. Having worked in clear and transparent environments where communication is critical. I have the ability to bring a new, more user-friendly face to the Port of Seattle. |
3. Please describe in sufficient detail, one to three accomplishments or contributions of which you are most proud. These examples should illustrate effective skills and capabilities you think apply to the office you are seeking. These accomplishments may have occurred at any time in your personal, professional, or public life.
4. Please list or describe your current and past activities in the community in which you have acquired skills that relate to the office you seek. Include your role in the activity and the year(s) in which you were involved. Involvement consists of many areas such as family, neighborhood, community, employment, or public life.

As a resident of King County I have been involved with a diverse range of organizations, which I feel represent the broad range of interests and concerns of the citizens of King County. I am a long time member of Long Live the Kings, a group focused on preserving West coast salmon populations. In 2003 I was appointed to the Board of Regents at Bastyr University, which focuses on better health through scientific, responsible self-managed practices. I recently accepted an invitation to serve on the Board of Trustees at Bastyr. Also since 2003 I have been the Chair of the Seattle Preparatory High School Capital Campaign Finance Committee. Living on Capitol Hill and having a son as well as myself attend Seattle Prep, I am a member of their community and believe strongly in the value of a Jesuit education, which emphasizes community service and social justice. In 2002 my wife and I chaired the Annual Endowment Dinner for St. Joseph’s School and Church. I am on the Board of Directors at Sharebuilder Corporation, whose mission is to help every American save and invest. In addition, I am on the Board of Directors at Biomed Comm, Inc, a company dedicated to finding affordable treatment for AIDS, Autism, and general health concerns. I have also been a representative for several organizations, including speaking to the Western State Treasurers Association in 1999 on behalf of Michael J. Murphy, the then and current Treasurer of the State of Washington. In 2001 and 2002 I was invited to speak to students at the University of Washington Albers School of Business on global economic issues and also careers in the investment industry. Since 2003 I have served on the Board of Washington Wine Country, an economic development institution dedicated to impoving opportunities for citizens of Washington through the promotion of our State's unique world class wine industry. Through my involvement with these organizations I better understand the needs, values and priorities of the stakeholders of the Port of Seattle, the citizens of King County.

A Port Commissioner's main duties include establishing policy and employing the Executive Director. In practice policies are often set through direct vote on specific projects. Too often in the current environment the links between Commission policy for long-term strategy and direction are seperated by ad-hoc staff projects. The Commission should be deciding on the long-term strategic direction of the Port of Seattle and monitoring success in achieving these goals through its employer position of the Executive Director. The Port Commission has a fiduciary responsibility for the public's trust and assets, and should exercise strong governance and prudence in the management of both. In its role as a public-purpose corporation it is crucially important that the Port act as a good citizen, showing respect and stewardship for those affected by Port operations, labor relations and the environment. This includes seeking the input of the citizens of King County on a complex comprehensive basis. One very important step a Commissioner can take toward achieving this is by becoming more accessible and transparent. Once elected I plan to speak at least once a week to community groups across the State of Washington in order to be a more visible, approachable representitive of the Port and its plans for the future. |
