2005 CANDIDATE BACKGROUND QUESTIONNAIRE
FOR NON-JUDICIAL CANDIDATES

The Municipal League of King County requests every candidate who participates in the candidate evaluation process to submit background information prior to his/her interview with a candidate evaluation committee.  The questionnaire is the basis of the League’s research and interview process.  The League’s ratings are non-partisan; they are based on standards of Involvement, Effectiveness, Character, and Knowledge, all of which have been developed and refined over the past 90 years.

A printed version of the questionnaire is available for candidates who prefer to use the traditional format.  To obtain a hard copy, please contact the League office.  A copy of this questionnaire will be provided to Candidate Evaluation Committee members to help them prepare for your interview.  Candidate responses, except the confidential section, will be available to the general public at the League website.

 SECTION III

In this section, we are seeking responses that reflect the four ratings criteria: involvement, effectiveness, character, and knowledge.  These are defined as follows:

1.      In a page or less, why are you running for this office?  (Note: the interview committee will be given a copy of this statement before your interview; at the beginning of your interview you will have the opportunity to expand on this statement in any way you wish.)

Doing nothing is not an option.  Failure to act will only result in a future with worse traffic, worse pollution, greater economic and social disparities, and continuing erosion of our regional character and quality of life. I have chosen to run for the Seattle City Council because I have become very disillusioned with the lack of leadership in position #6.  I believe that Seattle needs much stronger leadership with a vision towards a bright city future.  Seattle has become, an also run, when it comes to being a city that provides and promotes a high quality of life through mitigating traffic issues, business supportive government, being good stewarts of the environment, relief in tax concerns,  and many other city and regional issues.  The incumbent has not in 2 terms provided a positive approach in resolving any of our pressing concerns.  Two terms is plenty enough opportunity to show the citizens of the great city of Seattle what is necessary to improve transportation, schools, job creation, business development, neighborhoods, and create an effective public safety program, he has failed in all of these areas.  I am prepared to step up and be a catalyst for collabrative problem solving from all areas.

I INTEND TO BE THE LEADER THAT PROMOTES "PUTTING THE LUSTER BACK ON SEATTLE".

2.      Describe your most important personal characteristics or traits as they relate to the office you seek.

I believe my strongest characteristic is a strong, ethical, sincere and passsionate spirit that can bring together a diverse coalition of the willing.  Having come from a background of having little or nothing in the way of family or community resources to achieving a relative amount of personal success and gaining access to many resources and opportunities makes me very aware of utilizing all our resources to it's highest and best use.  Being fiscally and socially responsive and responsible, I believe, are a couple of the most essential characteristics of public office.

3.      Please describe in sufficient detail, one to three accomplishments or contributions of which you are most proud.  These examples should illustrate effective skills and capabilities you think apply to the office you are seeking.  These accomplishments may have occurred at any time in your personal, professional, or public life.

I at times find it difficult to share my personal accomplishments because I have been trained as a young man to not be smug about what I may have accomplished.  Be that as it may, I first and formost feel my greatest accomplishment is raising and developing 5 wonderful women, namely my daughters.  There can never be a more personally satifying life event than having had the opportunity to be a part of the wonder of those blossoming feminine spirits.

Second, I feel extremely proud to have been a good son to such a wonderful man as my father, who raised me alone nearly all of my life.  He left me with the character to expect more of myself than what others may expect of me.  I benefited enormously from this training as it allowed me to accept others as they are and to be an inspiration wherever I could to those that otherwise need help.

Thirdly, I have come to the level I have inspite of obstacles that could have taken me down a different road.  By this I mean, I have developed a fairly successful company that has applied good business sense to provide an honest, knowledgable and professional service to all that I have come in contact with.  Each and every person that has had the opportunity to do business with my company has had a higher level of experience than what they may have expected.

These may seem like small personal accomplishments, but they show the passion and caring of what is put into every moment life has afforded me.

4.      Please list or describe your current and past activities in the community in which you have acquired skills that relate to the office you seek.  Include your role in the activity and the year(s) in which you were involved.  Involvement consists of many areas such as family, neighborhood, community, employment, or public life.

I generally do not keep records of my personal accomplishments, as I stated earlier, I have been trained to do my best in every thing I do, therefore I do not seek admiration as a consequence of my work.  I will attempt to reconstruct various services that I have performed which may not be in chronilogical order:

1. Board of Directors, Washington State Center for Real Estate Research, WSU 80'S

2. President, Seattle Junior Chamber of Commerce (Jaycees) 80'S

3. President, Seattle King County Board of REALTIST (NAREB) 90'S

4. Trustee, Board of Directors, Northwest Multiple Listing Service (NWMLS) 90'S

5. Chairman of Human Resources, Central Area Youth Association (CAYA) 80'S

6. Chairman of Economic Development, The Breakfast Group 2000

7. Seattle King County Board of REALTORS (2000 - 2004)

8. Washington State Association of REALTORS Board of Directors (1998 - 2002)

9. YWCA Project Self-Sufficiency 80's

I purposesly stepped away from service for the last few years to concentrate on building a business.  Therefore, most of my time has been committed to the real estate industry and providing service to my community.

  1. Please describe the duties of the office you seek.  Which are the most important duties and why?

Position #6 of the City Council is one of 9 positions that is a policy making body that also approves and adopts the City's budget. The Council provides for public safety and health, authorizes capital (building) improvements, levies taxes, oversees the finances and assets of the City, and promotes policy for the good of Seattle's citizens.

I believe that one of the most important duties of the council is overseeing the finances of the city.  This  is one of the most important duties of the council because many property owners are taxed heavily to benefit a more sustainable Seattle.

Capital facilities play an important role in helping communities define and support themselves.  The City invests a significant amount of public funds in capital improvements.  The choice to invest in capital facilities must be reviewed comprehensively and made within a framework that balances and evaluates the relative importance of competing needs.
