SECTION III

In this section, we are seeking responses that reflect the four ratings criteria: involvement, effectiveness, character, and knowledge.  These are defined as follows:

  • Involvement: What has the candidate done previously in family, neighborhood, community, volunteer work, employment or public life to suggest readiness to accomplish challenging objectives? How do these activities demonstrate readiness for the challenges unique to the office sought?

  • Effectiveness: Has the candidate demonstrated promise of being productive in the office sought?  Has the candidate shown the ability to work with other people?

  • Character: Do the candidate's personal traits show the ability to take on the responsibilities of campaigning for and holding the public office she or he is seeking? Is the candidate a leader, participant or observer?  Is the candidate trustworthy, reliable and candid?

§         Knowledge: Has the candidate demonstrated the willingness and ability to learn and adapt?  Does the candidate understand the duties and challenges of the office sought?  Does the candidate have a firm grasp of the issues important to his or her constituency and their potential effects?

1.      In a page or less, why are you running for this office?  (Note: the interview committee will be given a copy of this statement before your interview; at the beginning of your interview you will have the opportunity to expand on this statement in any way you wish.)

I am running for judicial office to offer the voters of King County a real choice. Diversity on the Bench, in all its varieties - gender, race, sexual orientation, ethnicity, areas of legal practice and life experience, is essential for a fair, just and effective judicial system.  Judges are called upon to judge a wide variety of people and a wide array of issues. I possess the breadth and diversity of legal and life experience to make such judgments wisely and correctly.

As evidenced by my long career in public service, I find satisfaction and pride in helping others. As a Superior Court judge, I would have the opportunity to make a real difference in the lives of the individuals who appear before me, as well as the legal system and society at large.

Lastly, I am seeking judicial office because I belive that a strong and independent judiciary is an essential component of a free and democratic society, and I wish to play an active role in preserving and protecting this venerable institution.

2.      Describe your most important personal characteristics or traits as they relate to the office you seek.

I am a good listener, open-minded, reflective conscientious, caring, committed, connected to my community, quick to learn, curious, intelligent, fair and firm.

3.      Please describe in sufficient detail, one to three accomplishments or contributions of which you are most proud.  These examples should illustrate effective skills and capabilities you think apply to the office you are seeking.  These accomplishments may have occurred at any time in your personal, professional, or public life.

I am very proud of my service as a Peace Corps volunteer in Morocco.  I  spent two years in a remote town teaching English at the local highschool.  Although the skill I was providing was not relevant to most of my students' lives, I believe our daily interactions and exchanges were intrinsically valuable and meaningful.

Rather than specific accomplishments, I am proud of the fact that I have dedicated my life to public service and to working to make our world more just.  Time and again, I have found myself on the side of the powerless or voiceless in their struggle for fairness and justice, and I am pleased I have been able to help make a difference.

4.      Please list or describe your current and past activities in the community in which you have acquired skills that relate to the office you seek.  Include your role in the activity and the year(s) in which you were involved.  Involvement consists of many areas such as family, neighborhood, community, employment, or public life.

  1. Please describe the duties of the office you seek.  Which are the most important duties and why?

A judge has many duties: to uphold the Federal and State Constitutions, to apply and interpret the law as intended the by Legislature within those constitutional parameters, to balance the protection of society and victims with the rights of the accused within the criminal system, to balance the claims of competing parties with the general civil system and to balance the rights of the parent with the best interests of the child in the domestic system.

It is a judge's paramount duty in this balancing act to ensure that the law is applied fairly and impartially.  To this end, a judge must be a vigilant moderator between the parties, ensuring each side is given a full and fair opportunity to mount and present a case.

A judge also has an obligation to work to improve the legal system and the administration of justice, as well as to be knowledgeable about and conversant with the entire community they serve.

Supplemental Judicial Candidate Questionnaire

1.   Briefly describe the nature of your current practice/position including types of clients and areas, if any, of specialization.  State what percentage involves civil litigation, criminal litigation, and/or nonlitigation.

My current practice is working as a  King County Superior Court Family Law Commissioner Pro Tem and Tribal Court Judge Pro Tem.  I also regularly speak on civil liberties issues. And I serve as volunteer and paid mediator.

To date, I have had a varied and well-rounded legal career. I have worked as a public defender, at the trial and appellate court levels. I have also practiced family, dependency, juvenile, juvenile offender, adoption, paternity, guardianship, civil commitment, consumer rights and civil liberties.  I have worked as a mediator, guardian ad litem on behalf of children, and custody evaluator.

2.   Identify all your experience as a neutral decision maker (e.g. judge, permanent or pro tem, in any jurisdiction, administrative law judge, hearing officer, arbitrator, etc.)

I have judicial experience gained through my work as a Tribal Court judge and a King County Superior Court Family Law Commissioner, Pro Tem.  In my work as a Pro Tem Commissioner, I handle the family law motions calendar, which includes domestic violence protection orders, dissolutions, custody actions, support actions, paternity actions and contempt actions.  As a Tribal Court judge, I heard matters identical to those in King County Superior Court – felonies, domestic, commercial, etc. In fact, much of the Tribal Code is patterned after the laws of Washington State and both courts use the Washington State Rules of Evidence in trial matters.
