SECTION III
In this section, we are seeking responses that reflect the four ratings criteria: involvement, effectiveness, character, and knowledge. These are defined as follows:
1. In a page or less, why are you running for this office? (Note: the interview committee will be given a copy of this statement before your interview; at the beginning of your interview you will have the opportunity to expand on this statement in any way you wish.)
|
I seek to effectively represent the diverse interests of 5th District constituents in a fair, open-minded and principled manner. I emphasize putting my business experience in finance and technology to work streamlining state government bureaucracy so that it’s more responsive and accountable to the average citizen and improves our quality of life in our community.
Specifically, I would like to see:
• An improvement in the public’s confidence that our constitutional government process works to address their daily needs and that their participation makes a real difference.
• A state government regulatory culture that focuses on the common sense priorities of citizens and delivers customer service that empowers citizens and businesses to be self-reliant and builds trust.
• A state transportation planning, financing and construction program that actually works to accommodate our citizens’ lifestyle preference and provides for a healthy economy.
• A nationally competitive professional development program and compensation package for recruiting entry-level teachers to assure that our children’s learning needs are served well into the future.
• An environmental conservation policy that protects our state’s natural environment and that fairly accommodates individuals’ constitutional property rights in a timely manner. |
2. Describe your most important personal characteristics or traits as they relate to the office you seek.
|
I consider the three most important characteristics to be patience, fortitude and humor.
Our constitutional legislative process is both complicated and dynamic, composed of a broad diversity of personalities and opinions. The patience to understand the process and the people in the process is essential to understand how to initiate change for the better. Patience is the cornerstone of perspective and good judgement.
Of equal weight is the fortitude to challenge the dead hand of political correctness and special interest influences and to advocate for understanding and change that benefits real people. Advocating for real change, and not just window dressing, requires a willingness to "take the heat" from all sides.
To balance the stresses of both patience and fortitude one needs a good sense of humor. Differences in opinion and philosophy need not make people less civil to each other personally. Working in a competitive partisan environment requires a good sense of humor to get bipartisan results. |
3. Please describe in sufficient detail, one to three accomplishments or contributions of which you are most proud. These examples should illustrate effective skills and capabilities you think apply to the office you are seeking. These accomplishments may have occurred at any time in your personal, professional, or public life.
4. Please list or describe your current and past activities in the community in which you have acquired skills that relate to the office you seek. Include your role in the activity and the year(s) in which you were involved. Involvement consists of many areas such as family, neighborhood, community, employment, or public life.
|
My interests are guided by my personal principle that it is important to give back to your community. The scheduling and ethical constraints of a legislator place an exceptional premium on the time available for outside activities. My first priority is to remember my family. Secondly, I focus on those issues that I believe provide the most significant long term benefits to the community. My focus has been on parenting skills, respect for our natural environment and community job creation.
Children’s Services of Snoqualmie Valley (CSSV) -- Board of Directors – 1999-Current
Successfully raising a family is the challenge in life. Early childhood development assistance and family support are essential to help parents in today’s society. CSSV is the cornerstone of providing these types of services in the Snoqualmie Valley. The Snoqualmie Valley is a growing community with diverse interests. As a board we are consistently challenged to meet our community’s parenting needs.
Washington National Park Fund (WNPF) -- Board of Directors -- 1998 – Current
Our state’s national parks represent our finest efforts of preservation of our natural environment. These parks provide the best opportunity to educate our youth about the importance of environmental conservation and a recreational sanctuary to renew ourselves and our families. WNPF raises private contributions to supplement the operating budgets of these national parks. As a board we are consistently developing collaborative relationships with those interested in sustaining our national parks.
Community Chambers of Commerce (Snoqualmie Valley, Issaquah, Maple Valley) -- 1996 – Current
Local chambers of commerce are the catalyst for a healthy community. Small businesses create the jobs and wages that allow a community to invest in community assets that enhance our quality of life, such as social service centers, recreational facilities and public works infrastructure. The social relationships developed in this forum help build understanding.

The most important duty is to listen to the concerns of the constituents of your district and sort out what you can (or can’t) do to help them fix their problem. Sometimes it’s just helping straighten out lost paper work. Sometimes it’s investigating an agency program that’s become dysfunctional. Sometimes it’s developing a law that has statewide impact.
A constitutional oath to office is an exceptional responsibility of public trust and personal commitment and the most important duty to live up to that oath is to not compromise your integrity or the integrity of the institution.
To the best of one’s ability to provide an honest assessment of the facts on an issue to the public so they can determine if government is acting in a responsive, accountable and cost-effective manner. |
EDUCATION BACKGROUND SUMMARY
The Municipal League’s Candidate Evaluation Report is distributed to voters in print and/or on our website. It includes a summary of the candidate’s education. Please summarize your education in 120 characters (letters, punctuation, and space all combined). The League will delete material that exceeds the space limit by beginning with the last entry. Suggested order is (degree) (subject) (school) (year, if desired).
Note: If this question is left blank the League will not include education information in your candidate profile.
|
My degree is a BA in Economics with a minor in Political Science from the University of Alabama. |
FOR PUBLICATION IN CANDIDATE EVALUATION REPORT
The Municipal League’s Candidate Evaluation Report also includes a summary of each candidate’s civic involvement. Please summarize your civic involvement in the space below. We will make every attempt to include the information in the Candidate Evaluation Report as submitted. Due to space restrictions in the Report, your response is limited to 500 characters (letters, punctuation, and spaces all combined). It is important that you list your involvement beginning with the most important and ending with the least important. If you exceed the length of response permitted, or if the League should find it necessary to shorten responses for publication purposes, deletions will be made beginning with the last item listed.
Note: This information will appear verbatim on the League’s Candidate Evaluation Report. If this question is left blank, the Municipal League will not include information on your civic involvement in the Report.
Check here if you would like the Municipal League to copy the first 500 characters from Question 4 to paste into this section.
