SECTION III

In this section, we are seeking responses that reflect the four ratings criteria: involvement, effectiveness, character, and knowledge.  These are defined as follows:

1.      In a page or less, why are you running for this office?  (Note: the interview committee will be given a copy of this statement before your interview; at the beginning of your interview you will have the opportunity to expand on this statement in any way you wish.)

I am running because I believe we live in a great state and a great nation, and we need to chart a new course to better serve our citizens.   My decision  was based largely on the conditions and issues that concern the citizens of Washington.  We are faced with many of the same problems year after year, and we have not solved them in the last ten or so years!   Our state ranks too high in all the wrong catagories (traffic, failed businesses, teacher salaries to name a few), and citizens have lost confidence in state government's ability to address and solve the problems that face us.  Our citizens live in a beautiful state, they desire a good job, and a positive environment to raise their families, I want to see government responsive to the issues  that concern our citizens.

I believe this election will center on the philosophy of governing in our state.  We have tried some methods over the past ten years that have failed.  Our state agencies have run away with spending, and the services have declined.  I favor performance audits, high accountability and smaller state government.    State government has not been an encourager of business in our state, we must put people back to work, reward new business ventures and help them begin to create economic growth which will help us provide a higher quality of life and reduce taxes and fees to our citizens.  We must address the quality of life of our citizens; issues that rank high in citizen's concerns are transportation, education, healthcare to name a few.

We cannot address these problems by throwing money we don't have at them, we must address efficiency in government, and stimulate our growth in the economy and then take them one at a time.  It requires a new direction in Olympia, new ideas, bold leadership, and working together for the betterment of all of our citizens.

2.      Describe your most important personal characteristics or traits as they relate to the office you seek.

Integrity, honesty with the citizens I will represent.  I believe I have the experience and background to bring new approaches to old problems, and the relational skills to work together with others to focus on the root cause of problems.  I am dedicated to measuring every action with the impact it causes our citizens and their families.

3.      Please describe in sufficient detail, one to three accomplishments or contributions of which you are most proud.  These examples should illustrate effective skills and capabilities you think apply to the office you are seeking.  These accomplishments may have occurred at any time in your personal, professional, or public life.

In my twenty two years in the service, I was given jobs that required political and relational skills to solve problems.  I worked in joint assignments with other services as well as civilian government agencies.

After retiring, I prepared a development plan for a non profit camp and conference center which has now gone through over twenty years of experience.  That effort has yielded good results, the organization has gone form a $125,000/year operation to over two million dollars, a new board has taken over, formed a new corporation, and then purchased worked to bring the site under single ownership.

I have worked with youth and families for the past twenty years.   Sponsoring and programming family events, summer camps, coaching, and teaching leadership through an intern program has kept me very involved with people and their concerns.

4.      Please list or describe your current and past activities in the community in which you have acquired skills that relate to the office you seek.  Include your role in the activity and the year(s) in which you were involved.  Involvement consists of many areas such as family, neighborhood, community, employment, or public life.

I have been involved and served in leadership my whole life, I love solving problems, and I enjoy working with people.  My leadership style has been successful over many years, and through many challenges both in the military and as a CEO.   That experience has led me to positions on the national board of my camping association, a board member and elected officer of the chamber of commerce, and involved me in politics at the local and state level for the past 14 years.

  1. Please describe the duties of the office you seek.  Which are the most important duties and why?

First, being elected is a responsibility, a trust from  the citizens of the district.  I take that very seriously, and feel it is the key to being a successful representative.  They elect because they trust in the judgement of the candidate more than the position on issues.   I must know the concerns of the citizens and be consistent with the way I vote, and be honest on issues that are controversial.  Being relational and being a leader is very important if we expect to accomplish the people's business by uniting behind a purpose and solution to our state's problems.
