SECTION III

In this section, we are seeking responses that reflect the four ratings criteria: involvement, effectiveness, character, and knowledge.  These are defined as follows:

1.      In a page or less, why are you running for this office?  (Note: the interview committee will be given a copy of this statement before your interview; at the beginning of your interview you will have the opportunity to expand on this statement in any way you wish.)

I have been a physician for 30 years and have seen tremendous change in the medical field. Unfortunately, much of that change has been to the detriment of patients with increasing costs, decreasing access and an increase in everyones' frustration level. After retiring several years ago, it became clear to me that the most effective way to improve the situation was to hold public office.

2.      Describe your most important personal characteristics or traits as they relate to the office you seek.

I was one of the founders of the Open Heart Surgery Program at Overlake Hospital in Bellevue and past Chief of the Department of Surgery. My responsibility was to get a group of professionals to all work together for the common good of the patients with an outcome that had to be perfect. Also, I have served as President of the East King County American Heart Association and Chairman of the Puget Sound Heart Institute. I clearly believe I have the leadership skills to be an effective Representative

3.      Please describe in sufficient detail, one to three accomplishments or contributions of which you are most proud.  These examples should illustrate effective skills and capabilities you think apply to the office you are seeking.  These accomplishments may have occurred at any time in your personal, professional, or public life.

1) Founding the Open Heart Surgery Program on the Eastside, which cosistently ranks as one of the top 100 hearyt programs in the country

2)Being selected as one of the Top Docs in the Puget Sound Area

3) In spite of a 24/7 career, finding time to help raise 2 children who are solid citizens and contributors to the community

4.      Please list or describe your current and past activities in the community in which you have acquired skills that relate to the office you seek.  Include your role in the activity and the year(s) in which you were involved.  Involvement consists of many areas such as family, neighborhood, community, employment, or public life.

1) Rotary - Bellvue and Woodinville Clubs  2002-present

2) Wa State Liability Reform Coalition Board  2001-present

3) Overlake Hospital Foundation Board  1999-present

4) Chair, Puget Sound Heart Institute  1995-1997

5) President, East King County Am Heart Assoc  1991-1993

6) Chair, Dept of Surgery, Overlake Hospital  1994-1996

7) Pvt Practice of Cardiothorcic Surgery, Bellevue and Kirkland, WA  1986-2001

  1. Please describe the duties of the office you seek.  Which are the most important duties and why?

The most important duty is representing the people in the 45th District as the Legislature creates law.
