SECTION III

In this section, we are seeking responses that reflect the four ratings criteria: involvement, effectiveness, character, and knowledge.  These are defined as follows:

1.      In a page or less, why are you running for this office?  (Note: the interview committee will be given a copy of this statement before your interview; at the beginning of your interview you will have the opportunity to expand on this statement in any way you wish.)

After working in Olympia during this last session, and witnessing our state government firsthand, I am impressed with the size of the challenges that lie ahead.  Washington State faces some serious issues relating to our quality of life.  Transportation, the economy, healthcare and education are all areas where the decisions we make in the very near future will have dramatic long-term consequences.  Recognizing the passion that I have always had for the process of government, Senate Majority Leader Bill Finkbeiner encouraged me to directly participate by running for office.  Bill was elected when he was 22, and his comment to me, which really inspired me to consider running, spoke to the dire need of more energy and enthusiasm being brought in to the process by younger participants.  I am often asked, “Why run now, when you are so young?”  But to me, the real question is, “Why not run, while you are young?”

The 43rd district has elected its state representatives with, to quote the Seattle Times, “vote totals that would make a dictator blush-100 percent- in every general election since 1996”.  How can the process be well served when voters do not get the opportunity to hear a differing position?  The need for choice, the most powerful tool of democracy, above all else, inspires me to run for state representative of the 43rd district.

2.      Describe your most important personal characteristics or traits as they relate to the office you seek.

I have the enthusiasm and the mental aptitude to serve effectively.  I believe it takes a healthy combination of idealism and pragmatism to get things done in today’s political arena.  The balance between sticking up for your beliefs and the willingness to compromise, which I possess, will accomplish results.  The desire for results must always be accompanied by strong ethical principles.  I identify with the daily struggles of citizens, and share their concerns, including the opportunity for upward mobility.

3.      Please describe in sufficient detail, one to three accomplishments or contributions of which you are most proud.  These examples should illustrate effective skills and capabilities you think apply to the office you are seeking.  These accomplishments may have occurred at any time in your personal, professional, or public life.

While interning in Olympia, I wrote press releases and editorials, and drafted senate resolutions that effectively communicated the business of the legislature to the citizens of Washington State.  Knowing how to clearly communicate to constituents is essential to representing them.

As a student, I volunteered, helping to build a house for low-income families through Habitat for Humanity.  I witnessed first hand the difficult circumstances that some people face and the positive impact of people coming together to help the needy take control of their lives.

As an enlisted member of the US Navy, I managed all the records for over 1000 recruits, oversaw a staff of eight assistants, and led groups on administrative functions.

4.      Please list or describe your current and past activities in the community in which you have acquired skills that relate to the office you seek.  Include your role in the activity and the year(s) in which you were involved.  Involvement consists of many areas such as family, neighborhood, community, employment, or public life.

I have volunteered for the Museum of Flight for over ten years as a tour guide and youth educator.  I am comfortable speaking to large groups and delivering information in a concise and effective manner.  1994-Present.

With the STARS program, I tutored under-privileged children in Math, Science, and English.  I witnessed first hand the power or role models, and the challenges in the education system.  2000.

  1. Please describe the duties of the office you seek.  Which are the most important duties and why?

As a state representative, I would serve in a way that demonstrates the limited role of government.  Government should be a facilitator, and when necessary, a regulator.  I think it is important for government to remember its role and not overstep its bounds.

In this spirit, I would act as a liaison between the residents of the 43rd district and their state government, facilitating the process whenever possible, assisting in resolving issues directly, and working to address the concerns of my constituents.  This is important because our government is there to serve the people, not the other way around.

I would participate in the identification of issues facing citizens, as well as the crafting and implementation of legislation to mitigate those issues.  This is something I would contribute to, on both a local and state level.
