In this section, we are seeking responses that reflect the four ratings criteria: involvement, effectiveness, character, and knowledge. These are defined as follows:
1. In a page or less, why are you running for this office? (Note: the interview committee will be given a copy of this statement before your interview; at the beginning of your interview you will have the opportunity to expand on this statement in any way you wish.)
|
I have spent my entire professional life fighting for people who could not fight for themselves. As an attorney, I've represented workers who were exposed to toxic substances at the worksite--harmful chemicals such as asbestos that inflict permanent, and oftentimes deadly, damage. In many of these instances, the corporations knew full well of the deadly effects of this exposure but they did little to protect their employees. I represented these workers in a court of law, or in cases when the individual had already passed away, I represented their surviving family members. I helped these victims fight against corporate greed and malfeasance.
Now, I am taking on this new challenge in my career to fight on behalf of those who need and deserve more from our leaders in Olympia. I see too many schools that aren't living up to the promise of a 21st Century education. I see traffic problems that get worse every year, threatening our environment and our quality-of-life. I see too many children who do not have adequate healthcare. And worst of all, I see a Legislature that fails to address these issues by making them a priority. I am running for state Senate to reorder our priorities and to deliver a better future for our kids. |
2. Describe your most important personal characteristics or traits as they relate to the office you seek.
|
As a lawyer, I took on what seemed like insurmountable odds on behalf of people in need, and I was successful. I am tenacious, dogged, and determined in the courtroom, and as a state Senator, I will be the same on behalf of my district and the people that I represent.
I understand that a good legislator is one who listens. I will encourage constant communication with my constituents, and I will listen and respect my colleagues in the Legislature. During my campaign, I have spoken to thousands of residents, listening to people about their concerns and telling them about my approach to our community's problems. Open communication is certainly a good campaign tactic, but it also makes for a good approach to policy. I will be a state Senator who listens.
I know the value of negotiation and compromise. As an attorney, I have helped negotiate many settlements for my clients--settlements that brought both sides together and left each with the ability to claim victory. I am not interested in going to Olympia in order to get credit, but rather to bring about compromise on issues of importance for our future. Being able to sit down and talk to people with opposite viewpoints is more valuable than simply proposing bills that have no chance to pass. Through negotiation, everyone can win. |
3. Please describe in sufficient detail, one to three accomplishments or contributions of which you are most proud. These examples should illustrate effective skills and capabilities you think apply to the office you are seeking. These accomplishments may have occurred at any time in your personal, professional, or public life.
4. Please list or describe your current and past activities in the community in which you have acquired skills that relate to the office you seek. Include your role in the activity and the year(s) in which you were involved. Involvement consists of many areas such as family, neighborhood, community, employment, or public life.

I have spent my entire life serving the various communities I have lived in, from working for political candidates I believed would better serve the public to working for the Social Security Administration to litigating on behalf of those who could not stand up for themselves.
I was actively involved as a soccer coach for all three of my children from 1996 to 1997, continuing occasionally as a substitute coach over the years.
I joined my daughters for community service projects and other activities through the Y Princesses, as well as being involved in my son's Y Guides program, from 1996 through 2003.
I served on the board of the Pike Place Market Foundation, overseeing the administration of the charities operated by the foundation from 1997 through 1999.
For my work in the legal profession and as a recognition of my service to the practice, I was named one of Washington's Best Lawyers by Washington Law & Politics magazine in 2000.

The most important part of the job of a state Senator is to listen to what the constituents have to say and to understand their needs. As their voice in Olympia, I will actively seek out the opinions of my constituents. It is important that a state Senator understands the needs and concerns of his or her constituents in order to most properly represent them, and that's what I plan to do.
As a Washington state Senator, I will be called upon to make judgments about the future of our state on a daily basis. From providing strict oversight of our government's agencies to working on a budget with the majority or minority party to drafting new legislation that takes everyone's interests into consideration, I will be a thoughtful Senator who listens to those who are willing to come to the table. Far too often, our current state leaders in Olympia either fail to listen or to negotiate realistic compromises. I aim to change that, and if successful, will be an effective state Senator for both the people of my district and for all who live throughout the state of Washington. |

Brian Weinstein has been involved in his community for his entire life. He started as a concerned citizen activist before moving on to the Social Security Administration, then on to a career in law.
