In this section, we are seeking responses that reflect the four ratings criteria: involvement, effectiveness, character, and knowledge. These are defined as follows:
1. In a page or less, why are you running for this office? (Note: the interview committee will be given a copy of this statement before your interview; at the beginning of your interview you will have the opportunity to expand on this statement in any way you wish.)
|
I am running for this office because I believe in putting my leadership in action, and now is the time for a responsive and accountable leadership in the 37th District. I am running because we must provide equitable education and not simply equal funding in education. I am running because we need to stablelize an educated workforce for our future and this will only be made possible by consistent funding in Pre K-K-12, technical programs, work training programs, and Higher Ed. I am running because health care in Washington State needs to become a right for all. This can only happen with leaders who will take a stand and find progressive solutions for our deteriorating system. I am running because I want to see more jobs stay in Washington, and I want to see the promotion of small and local business ventures. I will fight to see these issues through in Olympia, and I will not be found voting on the wrong side of education issues, stable healthcare, or the promotion of employment training and local business ventures. I will put my Leadership in Action in Olympia and I will be accoutable and accessesible to the people of the 37th District. |
2. Describe your most important personal characteristics or traits as they relate to the office you seek.
|
My most important traits are putting leadership in action, a strong desire to serve people, and the priority that I place on building coalitions and concensus. It takes great leadership and desire to serve others and I believe that after many years of volunteering my time with different organizations I am ready to serve people at the government level. Being a legislator is more than just making laws and allocating money, it is leading the way and providing service to the people that I will represent. I learned the need and practice of building concesus and coalitions thorughout my professional and public service career. No single individual is able to effectively make decisions that affect many people without the ability to build concensus and coalitions in the decision making process. I have made it a priority in my leadership to build coalitions and concensus when making decisions and policies that affect the lives of many, and I will bring this priority to Olympia. Lastly, it takes a leader who understands the need for public programs and private business, and not a leader who simply has an either or mindset. My experiences in public service and the private sector have given me an understanding of these needs, and it is these experieces that give me the ability to fill the demands of a State Represenative. |
3. Please describe in sufficient detail, one to three accomplishments or contributions of which you are most proud. These examples should illustrate effective skills and capabilities you think apply to the office you are seeking. These accomplishments may have occurred at any time in your personal, professional, or public life.
4. Please list or describe your current and past activities in the community in which you have acquired skills that relate to the office you seek. Include your role in the activity and the year(s) in which you were involved. Involvement consists of many areas such as family, neighborhood, community, employment, or public life.

I have been a volunteer in different capacities with HOPE Worldwide and its various arms such as HOPE for Kids and HOPE Washington for nearly twelve years. With this organiztion I have canvassed inner city neigborhoods helping to educate families on the need for having their children immunized and where these immunization are provided. I have volunteered with HOPE Washington to clean up local schools such as Garfield, Whitworth, and Eckstein. With this organization I have also been a group leader where we helped clean homes for the elderly, visited and encouraged the elderly at live in senior centers, and worked with an orphanage in Prague. I began volunteering with HOPE Worldwide and its various arms in 1993 and continue to do so today. From 1999-2000 I led a group of volunteers that spent time every month with kids at Childrens Hospital. As a volunteer speaker with the Schools First levy campaign, I spoke to various organizations on the need for renewing capital levies for Seattle schools. This levy eventually passed and our School District, city, and community have all benefited from it. As a volunteer with Washington Mutual's School Banking, I had the oppurtunity to speak to elementary classes on the importance of beginning to save money early. Working with children has taught me to be patient and to be specific. I have also worked with other organizations thorughout Seattle like the Orion Center, Seattle Works, and am currently the Executive Vice President on the board of directors of Just Ask?, a newly formed non-profit in Seattle. In the end, working with these organizations whether I was working to clean up schools, do funraising, teaching, or meeting the needs of people who did not have the resources to do it themsleves, has prepared me to serve the people of our community.

The most important duties of the office that I am seeking are service to the public and the representation of the electorate in Olympia. These are the most important duties of the job because this is ultimately what people elect officials to do, they want service and representation. As an elected official, I will serve the public by having community meetings to discuss the current and foreseeable challenges faced by my constituents, and work with them to find solutions. I will also make sure that I am accessible and accountable to local orgnizations and business groups. The other major duites of the office that I am seeking are the creation of and approval of the state' s budget, and new legislation. This includes prioritizing funding, analyzing the specific needs of public programs, and allocating the tax revenues in the most efficient way possible. Staying updated on the issues affecting my district and state will be crucial for the proper allocation of tax revenues in the budget and the implementation new legislation. |
