SECTION III

In this section, we are seeking responses that reflect the four ratings criteria: involvement, effectiveness, character, and knowledge.  These are defined as follows:

  • Involvement: What has the candidate done previously in family, neighborhood, community, volunteer work, employment or public life to suggest readiness to accomplish challenging objectives? How do these activities demonstrate readiness for the challenges unique to the office sought?

  • Effectiveness: Has the candidate demonstrated promise of being productive in the office sought?  Has the candidate shown the ability to work with other people?

  • Character: Do the candidate's personal traits show the ability to take on the responsibilities of campaigning for and holding the public office she or he is seeking? Is the candidate a leader, participant or observer?  Is the candidate trustworthy, reliable and candid?

  • Knowledge: Has the candidate demonstrated the willingness and ability to learn and adapt?  Does the candidate understand the duties and challenges of the office sought?  Does the candidate have a firm grasp of the issues important to his or her constituency and their potential effects?

1.      In a page or less, why are you running for this office?  (Note: the interview committee will be given a copy of this statement before your interview; at the beginning of your interview you will have the opportunity to expand on this statement in any way you wish.)

I believe government that governs least, governs best.  The more freedom people have the more productive they will be.  No one should be restricted in peaceful pursuit of their goals as long as they don't infringe on others rights to do the same.

My goal is to find and eliminate laws and restrictions that are not necessary for personal freedom and safety.  Government should abide by it's constitutional mandates which include police and an equitable court system.  My primary goal is to find and eliminate unconstitutional laws or regulations.

I will piously fight for state's rights and reject and condemn federal incursions in these areas.  Examples: Federal rejection of state laws regarding medicinal use of marijuana and assisted suicide laws.  The federal government has become too big and intrusive, one of the main duties of any state legislator is to curb federal usurpation and interference with constitutional separation of powers

2.      Describe your most important personal characteristics or traits as they relate to the office you seek.

Being a good listener.  I care about other people’s opinions and concerns is paramount.  I weigh both sides of issues and will decide based on fairness and always favoring the lease government intrusion.

3.      Please describe in sufficient detail, one to three accomplishments or contributions of which you are most proud.  These examples should illustrate effective skills and capabilities you think apply to the office you are seeking.  These accomplishments may have occurred at any time in your personal, professional, or public life.

The most important is razing three productive law-abiding and successful children.  Continuing this primary goal is helping my oldest daughter - a working mother - raise and nurture her three children.  This was done with great help of my wife of 47 years (She must be a saint!)

As a talk radio host in Hawaii I promoted free enterprise and non-governmental solutions to many problems.

Organized campaigns in opposition to public funding of the baseball and football stadiums, recruiting others to help in these efforts.

4.      Please list or describe your current and past activities in the community in which you have acquired skills that relate to the office you seek.  Include your role in the activity and the year(s) in which you were involved.  Involvement consists of many areas such as family, neighborhood, community, employment, or public life.

Participated in "Meals on Wheels" program which involved meeting with, and delivery of food to limited income and senior citizens.  1998-2000

Taught safe driving courses for AARP(55Alive) developed interesting treatment of material.  1996-2001

Volunteered for West Seattle Hi-Yu Festivals; Helped with decorative float, sales of badges 2002-2003

Instructed study of U.S. constitution; organized study material, 1995-Present

  1. Please describe the duties of the office you seek.  Which are the most important duties and why?

Making of laws governing fellow citizens.  The most important duty is to assure that all laws uphold U.S. and State Constitutions.  These laws should be equitable to all, easily understood and give special treatment to no one.
