 SECTION III

In this section, we are seeking responses that reflect the four ratings criteria: involvement, effectiveness, character, and knowledge.  These are defined as follows:

1.      In a page or less, why are you running for this office?  (Note: the interview committee will be given a copy of this statement before your interview; at the beginning of your interview you will have the opportunity to expand on this statement in any way you wish.)

I am running for State House because I want to be the voice for the people of this district on the issues that matter to us.  For the last six years, some very important issues have taken a backseat on the agenda of the current incumbent.  Working to create jobs, promoting our public schools, and improving our health care system are all issues that people are talking about, but the solutions have been elusive in Olympia.  Throughout this campaign, I have committed myself to work on the issues that matter to our community.  I know we can do better in Olympia.

2.      Describe your most important personal characteristics or traits as they relate to the office you seek.

The most important personal characteristic I will bring to this office is the ability to look past partisan affiliation, listen to the concerns of all stakeholders, build coalitions, and solve problems.  Although our system provides for two separate political parties, I have found that many of our state's problems are not partisan issues.  Our children's education, for example, should not be a partisan matter.  There are real problems with the WASL, with charter schools, and with teacher pay that we are all talking about.  We need to stop talking and sit down and solve the problems.  Continuing partisan bickering on these issues only serves to further hurt the well-being of our public schools.  This is why I have been endorsed by the Washington Education Association.  Although they have typically supported Democrats in the past, I am glad to have earned their endorsement through my willingness to work with both sides and do what's right for our teachers and our students.

3.      Please describe in sufficient detail, one to three accomplishments or contributions of which you are most proud.  These examples should illustrate effective skills and capabilities you think apply to the office you are seeking.  These accomplishments may have occurred at any time in your personal, professional, or public life.

There are three accomplishments in my life that I am particularly proud of:  starting my own business, founding a church, and volunteering to pass the most recent Federal Way School District levies.

In 1989, with only my wife, a car, and $600 I came to Federal Way and started my own wholesale tire business.  In the fifteen years I've been doing business, my company has grown steadily where I have been able to turn healthy profits, give back to the community, and sufficiently provide for my family.

Secondly, in 1999 I started a small church out of my home in order to provide a voice for the unheard.  After much on-the-job training, I was officially ordained in 2000.  The congregation grew quickly and within a few years we located to a new facility and hired a full-time pastor to assume my position.  The church has now grown to over 200 members and over 500 regular attenders.

Lastly, I had the recent opportunity to volunteer my time and resources to work for the passage of the Maintenance and Operations and Technical Levies for the Federal Way School District.  Being part of a team of dedicated parents and volunteers was a rewarding experience especially on Election Night when both levies passed with the 60% majority necessary.

4.      Please list or describe your current and past activities in the community in which you have acquired skills that relate to the office you seek.  Include your role in the activity and the year(s) in which you were involved.  Involvement consists of many areas such as family, neighborhood, community, employment, or public life.

Vice President, Citizens for Federal Way Schools (April 2004 - current)

Founding Pastor, Christ the King Bible Fellowship (1999)
Board Member, African American Breast Cancer Coalition (February 2002 - current)

Member, Federal Way Kiwanis Club (November 2001 - current)

  1. Please describe the duties of the office you seek.  Which are the most important duties and why?

The primary duty of the office I seek is to enact the will of the people in my district.  This is primarily accomplished by enacting legislation in Olympia, but also in ensuring that the people remain well-informed of pending issues before the Legislature.  If elected, I have pledged to continue knocking on doors after each session to bring the business of the state to the doorstep of my constituents.

Public service is a distinct honor.  My job will be to provide a vision, implement legislation, and provide solutions at the state level for the problems we're facing in our homes, schools, churches, and jobs.  The all-encompassing duty of the office is to work to improve the quality of life for my constituents.
