SECTION III

In this section, we are seeking responses that reflect the four ratings criteria: involvement, effectiveness, character, and knowledge.  These are defined as follows:

1.      In a page or less, why are you running for this office?  (Note: the interview committee will be given a copy of this statement before your interview; at the beginning of your interview you will have the opportunity to expand on this statement in any way you wish.)

I am running for this office because I have a strong desire to go to Olympia and represent the people of the 11th District.  I am interested in representing ALL of the people, not just those of my own political party, or just those who are registered voters or citizens.

Many are disenfranchised citizens who will not vote because they are tired of politicians, lies and unethical behavior.  Many people in the 11th District are working hard towards citizenship, and deserve the same kind of respect and concern as those who are already citizens.

If I am elected, I will attempt to be accessible to everyone in the 11th District.

I am also running because I want to use the skills, knowledge and abilities that I have to effect positive dialog and legislation that benefits the citizens.  I believe that the people of the 11th District have spoken with a resounding NO on more than one occasion to tax increases.

At the doors, I find that people are concerned about over taxation.  At places of business, I find that business owners are concerned about over taxation.

Many of the problems that we face with not enough money to help those in need, not enough money to help businesses succeed so they can create jobs and not enough money to properly fund education stem from refusal to use common sense.

Common sense dictates that we hold government accountable for its spending habits.  Common sense dictates that we eliminate government waste.  Common sense also dictates, just as it does in a family, that no one is going to get their way 100% of the time.  We need to work together on both sides of the aisle to find creative solutions that put people and businesses first and our own selfish desires last.

I am not a politician.    I am a people person.  I believe that people come first andI have spent a lifetime serving others.  I wish to continue to do so in Olympia.

2.      Describe your most important personal characteristics or traits as they relate to the office you seek.

My most important personal characteristics that relate to the office I seek are:

a)  Tenacity.  I have always been tenacious.  When others get discouraged and quit, I look for the positive in the situation and continue to press forward.  It may take me a while to get to the end of the race, but I just keep going.  (Like the tortise vs the hare.)

b)  Positive attitude.  I truly believe that if life hands you lemons you make lemonade.  Example:  We moved into our current residence in Renton after we built it in 1981.  We were always in the 41st District.  When we were redistricted, we ended up in the 11th.  I had a choice:  Do nothing, it was a Democrat District, or do something positive.  I chose to become the 11th District Chair and serve the Republicans in that way.  I chose to become a part of the bi-partisan legislative committee for the Renton Chamber of Commerce and serve my communnity that way.  I have chosen to run in the 11th District even though I am a Republican.  I truly believe that I will win and represent everyone in Olympia.

c)  Organizational skills, communication skills and creative skills.  I inherited the best of both from my partents:  Organizational skills from my father and creative skills from my mother. I learned from both of them to be polite, respectful, honest, ethical and hospitable.  I learned to care about people.   I have had much training in communication, negotiation, the fine art of listening and public speaking.  All these combine to give me the ability to think 'outside the box', communicate effectively and help effect some positive legislation in Olympia.

3.      Please describe in sufficient detail, one to three accomplishments or contributions of which you are most proud.  These examples should illustrate effective skills and capabilities you think apply to the office you are seeking.  These accomplishments may have occurred at any time in your personal, professional, or public life.

a)  Raising a daughter and helping a foster daughter.  I was able to find creative ways to help earn money while our daughter was growing up so I could be there for her, and was there to support her during her teen years and some tough times.  The same with one of our foster daughters who was a troubled teen.  I was able to show her the love and acceptance she needed and never received and help her find her way in life.  I was unable to help the other girl as she had to be removed from our home for violent behavior including breaking my finger.

b)  Serving as the Chair of the Friends of Churches and Schools bi-partisan Committee that helped to overturn the moratorium placed on Churches and Schools (public and private) that took away rights to expand or build in rural areas.  In this capacity, I was able to use my organizational skills to gather almost 3,000 signatures in a short period of time from across the county; use my public speaking skills to communicate our concerns to the council; use my communication skills to call media attention to our efforts; and use my negotiating skills  privately to both Republicans and Democrats to influence an eventual overturn of the moratorium and approval of that overturn by the King County Executive.

c)  Serving as Division Governor for Toastmasters and leading the clubs of the District to become a Select Distinguished Toastmasters Division.  In this capacity, I was able to successfully motivate the Area Governors and Club Presidents to build strong healthy club memberships and help the Toastmasters in each club meet their educational speaking goals.

d)  Getting my AA Degree from Bellevue Community College in 1995.  My original plan to complete college when our daughter graduated from highschool did not occur due to some unfortunate family circumstances, but I was tenacious, and eventually graduated with honors, even though it took many years to do so.  Eventually, I will finish my 4 year degree also.

4.      Please list or describe your current and past activities in the community in which you have acquired skills that relate to the office you seek.  Include your role in the activity and the year(s) in which you were involved.  Involvement consists of many areas such as family, neighborhood, community, employment, or public life.

Mid 1970s; 1990.  Helped  troubled foster teens.

1969-1971; 1998-2001  Helped adults recover from heroin and alcohol addictions by taking them into our home.

1991-Present  Served as Toastmasters Club Officer, Area Governor, Division Governor and District Secretary.

2002-Present  Member of Renton Chamber and Legislative Committee.

1986-Present Republican Party:  PCO, Area Chair, District Chair, Co-chair King County Convention 2004, King County Platform Committe.

2001  Chair FOCAS - Friends of Churches and Public/Private Schools.

1989 Wrote, produced and directed a musical.

  1. Please describe the duties of the office you seek.  Which are the most important duties and why?

a)  To sponsor and vote for legislation that will benefit the people of the state of Washington and particularly the 11th District; and to communicate my opinions in a positive manner.

b)  To work with members of my own caucus, and at the same time work with members of the opposing party to effect positive legislation that benefits all the citizens.

c)  To communicate effectively with the people of the 11th District in such a way that they have the opportunity to also communicate with me, rather that just mailing them legislative mail that tells them what I want them to hear.

I have thought a lot about this.  It seems to me that perhaps a legislator should, in lieu of mailings, have a legislative office in the district.  I also believe it would be my responsibility to have numerous town hall meetings where the constituents are given the opportunity to interact and give their input.

d)  To hire a staff person who treats everyone in the district fairly and with dignity and respect, regardless of their political leanings.  Too often I have heard anecdotal stories of people offended because they tried to communicate either by letter, phone or email with their legislator (R or D), only to be rebuffed with rude comments by the staff person and/or the legislator if they did not agree with the caller or writer.

e)  To act in an honest, ethical manner and consider the needs of others above my own.
