SECTION III

In this section, we are seeking responses that reflect the four ratings criteria: involvement, effectiveness, character, and knowledge.  These are defined as follows:

1.      In a page or less, why are you running for this office?  (Note: the interview committee will be given a copy of this statement before your interview; at the beginning of your interview you will have the opportunity to expand on this statement in any way you wish.)

I am running for Senate in the 1st District because I want to continue to represent the people of the 1st District; Together we have made a difference.  Over the past 12 years, through our efforts, UW Bothell/Cascadia CC was located in the Bothell area to serve the families in the north King and south Snohomish Counties.  We put in place high academic standards with clear assessments (WASL) to measure our students & schools progress in helping all students meet the state standards.  This is the accountability we needed in our public schools.  We have been involved in economic development & transportation projects that serve both King and Snohomish County communities.  I still have the passion and committment to serve to people of the 1st district, and I look forward to the challenges we will face in the next 4 years - together we will continue to make a difference.

2.      Describe your most important personal characteristics or traits as they relate to the office you seek.

I have built alliances in the Senate and in the House, on both sides of the aisle, to solve the problems facing the people and families of Washington State through compromise and respect for each other's viewpoint.  I find through my work in the community and my years in the Senate I can help connect people & businesses together for networking.

1.  Strong Leader - I am recognized as a leader in K-12 education and in the Bothell community.  My word is trusted by my colleagues.

2.  Experience - I have learned to work with legislators; Whether I agree with them on every issue or not, we can find common ground, reach consensus and move forward on issues important to the people I represent. I.E. HB 2195 - Alternative assessments for the WASL.

3.  I have the ability to connect people to other people and to resources to solve problems and advance their agenda.  I.E. Tent City, Archbishop, youth program.

3.      Please describe in sufficient detail, one to three accomplishments or contributions of which you are most proud.  These examples should illustrate effective skills and capabilities you think apply to the office you are seeking.  These accomplishments may have occurred at any time in your personal, professional, or public life.

C.P. JOHNSON HUMANITARIAN AWARD.   In 1988, the Northshore School Board recieved the Governor's Award for excellence.  As a member of the Northshore School Board, I worked with members of the community to establish the C.P. Johnson Humanitarian Award with the $2,500 awarded to the school board.  Thousands of students in the Northshore School District continue to be recognized and honored for being humanitarians.  It is a tribute to my friend and educator C.P. Johnson and an honor for the children selected.  For more information, contact Jan Graves with the Northshore School District at 425-489-6000

EDUCATION REFORM AND RESTRUCTURING, 1993.  It took a bipartisan effort to pass House Bill 1209.  I was working to secure the votes in the Senate.  With my suggestion for it to be voluntary until 2000, we were able to secure the votes.  I feel passionately that with the high academic standards & clear assessments of students learning, public education must provide the opportunity for all children to learn and succeed.  This is a process and needs to be monitored as we progress toward 2008.  Because of these efforts, we have high academic standards, assessments and accountability in the public education system.  It was my privilege to work in a bipartisan relationship with Senator Steve Johnson to pass House Bill 2195 last legislative session.

ANTI HARRASSMENT BULLY BILL (HB 1444, SB 5528).  Year after year students came to Olympia and pleaded with us to do something about the harassment and bullying in their schools.  Moses Lake and Columbine opened our eyes, and with the help of my First District Youth Advisory Council to the Legislature, we manuvered the bully bill through the Senate and shared the Bill Signing with the Attorney General, Representative Ed Murray, my Youth Advisory Council Members, and Governor Locke.  Contact Nicholas Carlson, a student who testified before the Senate in support of the bill.  425-488-8054

4.      Please list or describe your current and past activities in the community in which you have acquired skills that relate to the office you seek.  Include your role in the activity and the year(s) in which you were involved.  Involvement consists of many areas such as family, neighborhood, community, employment, or public life.

NORTHSHORE SCHOOL BOARD DIRECTOR, 1977-1991; CHAIR OF NSSB, 1989.  I worked to provide children with learning disablities the opportunity to learn.  In 1977, dyslexia was not known or understood.  Today there are pilot programs in the Northshore School District that teach teachers the strategies to help students with dyslexia learn to read.  I have helped families in my communities access programs and resources needed for their children with learning disabilities.  I have worked to support and promote the teaching of children with disabilities and I serve on the special education advisory council to the Superintendent of Public Instruction.

HOLLYWOOD SCHOOL HOUSE, 1989- PRESENT.  In 1989, I started a new business, a wedding and conference center at Hollywood Schoolhouse in Woodinville.  I owned and managed the business until 1991.  I currently have a manager but I continue to oversee the operation of the business.  Being a small business owner, dealing with the permitting process, business taxes & regulations, and the training & supervising of employees has been of great value to me in the Senate.

CHAIR OF BOTHELL ARTS COUNCIL, 2001-PRESENT.  The Bothell Arts Council became a 501(c)(3) in 2002, the corporation is organized to capture and preserve Bothell's historical, cultural and entrepreneurial spirit by creating and displaying quality art projects, which attract the community & visitors to our city.  we currently have been awarded three large grants, have completed a historic mural on 101st & Main Street and 5 life sized murals on Main Street in Bothell.  We will begin a second large mural this summer on the Bothell Mall building and are currently purchasing 5-7 artistic metal bike racks for Bothell.  Contact Pat Pierce for more information.

GREATER BOTHELL CHAMBER OF COMMERCE.  Board Member of Greater Bothell Association, 2003-2004; Board Member of Greater Bothell Chamber of Commerce, 2004.  I was part of the committee to transform the Greater Bothell Association into the Greater Bothell Chamber of Commerce.

The duties of the office are, in order of importance:
