SECTION III

In this section, we are seeking responses that reflect the four ratings criteria: involvement, effectiveness, character, and knowledge.  These are defined as follows:

  • Involvement: What has the candidate done previously in family, neighborhood, community, volunteer work, employment or public life to suggest readiness to accomplish challenging objectives? How do these activities demonstrate readiness for the challenges unique to the office sought?

  • Effectiveness: Has the candidate demonstrated promise of being productive in the office sought?  Has the candidate shown the ability to work with other people?

  • Character: Do the candidate's personal traits show the ability to take on the responsibilities of campaigning for and holding the public office she or he is seeking? Is the candidate a leader, participant or observer?  Is the candidate trustworthy, reliable and candid?

  • Knowledge: Has the candidate demonstrated the willingness and ability to learn and adapt?  Does the candidate understand the duties and challenges of the office sought?  Does the candidate have a firm grasp of the issues important to his or her constituency and their potential effects?

1.      In a page or less, why are you running for this office?  (Note: the interview committee will be given a copy of this statement before your interview; at the beginning of your interview you will have the opportunity to expand on this statement in any way you wish.)

Community vitality and public service are important to me.  Strong leadership is required to guide us through these challenging times and I have the qualities needed.  I have a proven record of accomplishment in this community including co-chairing the successful Kent School District's Bond and Levy Campaign and forming the committee that helped to re-open the Kent Meridian Pool. I have a well-educated and rational mind, good at looking for creative ways to solve difficult challenges.  I am persuasive and can help motivate people to action.  Ultimately, I belive I can make a positive difference and want to be on the council to make that contribution as well as ensure that important services and faciilities are not lost during difficult economic times.

2.      Describe your most important personal characteristics or traits as they relate to the office you seek.

I have strong leadership abilities as evidenced in my co-chairing the recently successful Kent School Districts Bond and Levy campaign and organizing the committee that helped re-open the Kent Meridian pool.  I am excellent at educating and helping motivate people to action.

I am an excellent listener and carefully consider opinions before making an informed decision.

I have strong public speaking skills and am highly involved in the community.  I received the Kent Area PTA Council’s Spirit of the Community award and was awarded the Kent Chamber of Commerce’s in pursuit of Excellence Diversity in the Work Place award.

I have been a public employee serving for the City of Kent, King County, Cities of Redmond and Bellevue and have a strong commitment to public service.

I have an open and rational mind to help steer us through this challenging time and into the future creatively.  I am resourceful in seeking win-win solutions and creative compromises that will be needed for the challenges ahead.

3.      Please describe in sufficient detail, one to three accomplishments or contributions of which you are most proud.  These examples should illustrate effective skills and capabilities you think apply to the office you are seeking.  These accomplishments may have occurred at any time in your personal, professional, or public life.

1.  Helping find a win-win solution to the problem of the King County Pool at Kent Meridian High school.

When the King County Council announced that they would be closing all pools within city jurisdictions the City of Kent initially refused to agree to take the pool stating that it would be a revenue drain.  I helped form a dynamic committee that comprised business people and aquatic experts.  Together we were able to demostrate to the County, the City, and the School district that a non-profit, ( eventually formed by this committee) could successful run and manage the pool if the city agreed to accept ownership.  We succeeded in our efforts and the pool re-opened in March.  This accomplishment demonstrates my ability to help groups work together to reach a mutually beneifical ouctome that serves the community, as well as my persuasive  and leadership abilities.

2.  Co-chairing the successful Kent School Districts Bond and Levy campaign, February 2003.

This bond and levy passed during a time of great economic uncertainty and world unrest, at a time when most of the other south county bonds and levy's failed.  I helped to motivate and energize a team of citizens and persuade the public that these funds were critical to the future of our children and community.

3.  Creating the community stewardship program in King County to help communities preserve and protect their watersheds.

I created the highly popular and nationally acclaimed program to involve citizens in group efforts to preserve and protect local watersheds.  The program included small grants to communities to facilitate group projects designed to educate and protect local watersheds.  Outreach efforts included listening and responding to the needs of communities and assisting with programs, activities and funds to help the groups accomplish their goals.

4.      Please list or describe your current and past activities in the community in which you have acquired skills that relate to the office you seek.  Include your role in the activity and the year(s) in which you were involved.  Involvement consists of many areas such as family, neighborhood, community, employment, or public life.
